X-Men” MCU Film in Talks with “Thunderbolts*

Marvel Studios has confirmed plans for a new X-Men movie and is actively seeking one of Hollywood’s top directors to kick off the mutant phase in the MCU. Remarkably, the director they are eyeing is the one who recently crafted the highly praised Marvel film known as Thunderbolts, now rebranded as The New Avengers.

As reported by Deadline, director Jake Schreier is currently in negotiations with Marvel Studios to helm an upcoming X-Men film. The success of Schreier’s recent project, Thunderbolts*, has prompted Marvel to actively pursue him for their roster of directors. Negotiations are ongoing, but it appears that Schreier has been declining other offers due to his interest in the X-Men project. A recent meeting with Marvel further solidified their desire to sign Schreier, although they had previously recognized his enthusiasm for the X-Men franchise. It’s unknown who else was considered for the director position, but it seems that Marvel is eager to retain Schreier within their studio.

Transitioning from the Thunderbolts to the X-Men seems entirely plausible to Schreier, given his knack for blending a motley crew of underappreciated MCU characters into box office hits. Although a deal hasn’t been finalized yet, it appears that things are pointing in this direction. Unfortunately, specifics about which X-Men characters Schreier and team will employ are scant, but Kevin Feige has a 10-year strategy in place for the Mutant Saga. After the anticipated end of the Multiverse Saga with Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars, Marvel seems eager to breathe new life into their universe by incorporating the mutant superhero team.

‘Thunderbolts*’ Is the Best Example of MCU’s New Focus on Quality

It’s evident that Marvel Studios has a soft spot for the Thunderbolts, as the initial success of this unique ensemble movie has demonstrated. In a time when the MCU seems to be lacking in cinematic continuity, Thunderbolts is the invigorating boost fans have been craving. Even Disney CEO Bob Iger acknowledged the film during an earnings call, commending Marvel for prioritizing quality over quantity in their production process. His exact words:

It’s clear that our eagerness to add more content to our streaming service led us to tap into all of our creative resources, such as Marvel, for a larger volume of production. However, we’ve come to understand that producing more doesn’t always equate to better quality. In truth, we’ve acknowledged that our overproduction may have caused a loss in focus. By streamlining our approach and allowing Marvel to concentrate significantly more on their films, we believe this will lead to improved quality. I’m particularly optimistic about the upcoming project, Thunderbolts*. I feel quite confident about its potential.

Moving past “Captain America: Brave New World” and “Thunderbolts,” Marvel Studios plans to maintain its success with “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” this coming summer. The eagerly anticipated debut of the Fantastic Four in the MCU has been hinted at, and the principal cast is currently filming their roles for the Russo Brothers’ “Avengers: Doomsday,” which started production recently.
