The X-Men have returned, and that’s a big deal! Fans should be thrilled to see the original team from the Fox movies, especially because this is the first time they’re appearing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
So, what does all this mean? Essentially, it’s about Marvel moving forward instead of constantly looking back. Hopefully, this will allow them to finally give the X-Men the big-screen future they’ve always deserved – a future that truly feels like it belongs in the main Marvel universe, something the 20th Century Fox films never quite achieved.
The X-Men are getting a complete overhaul within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, starting with Avengers: Doomsday in 2026. Jake Schreier, the director of the popular Thunderbolts film coming out in 2025, will be directing the first full-length X-Men movie as part of this fresh start.
The OG X-Men Are Getting a Hard Reboot In the MCU
Schreier explained to MovieWeb that they’re striving for a reboot, something that feels completely new. He said Kevin Feige really wants to explore all the possibilities within the existing Marvel universe and ask, ‘What haven’t we done yet?’
He explained that he’d been revisiting a lot of classic comic books over the past year, including all of Chris Claremont’s work and many stories by Grant Morrison, because there’s so much amazing material out there.
We’ll get a much clearer picture of what’s happening with the X-Men when Avengers: Doomsday is released in December 2026. The movie will reveal who is—and isn’t—part of the new X-Men universe, putting an end to rumors about certain characters’ involvement.
Who’s In, Who’s Out of The MCU’s X-Men?
The movie features a returning cast including James Marsden, Alan Cumming, and Sir Patrick Stewart as Cyclops, Nightcrawler, and Professor Charles Xavier, respectively. Ian McKellen is also back as Magneto, and Hugh Jackman has come out of retirement to star alongside Ryan Reynolds in the highly anticipated film Deadpool & Wolverine.
Neither Halle Berry, who played Storm, nor other past X-Men cast members have been invited back by Marvel. Whether that’s accurate or not, it will be interesting to see what direction writer Michael Schreier takes the story. This is especially true now that The Fantastic Four are joining the MCU, adding another completely new superhero team to the mix.
He explained that the world they created has many fascinating details, but these aren’t meant to hint at the plot. They’re simply there to build a rich and immersive setting. The team focused on finding unexplored aspects of the world – areas that haven’t been fully developed in other films – so they could create something fresh and original.
Everyone is eagerly anticipating the future of the X-Men within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the positive reception to Thunderbolts suggests it’s in good hands with Schreier leading the way, as Feige carefully plans the overall story. It’s an exciting time for Marvel fans, with the promise of seeing the X-Men return to live-action soon.
