X-Men ’97 Creator Exposes Disney and Marvel Drama: Claims History Rewritten, Credit Stolen!

The creator of X-Men ’97, Beau DeMayo, has had a prolonged conflict with Disney and Marvel Studios following his dismissal as the show’s director just before its debut on Disney+. The production of X-Men ’97 was filled with rumors about challenging behavior and creative friction, making it more like a dramatic production than a typical series creation process. Yet, the ex-director has some pointed comments for an upcoming book centered around the show’s history.

After attending an interview panel at WonderCon 2025, Beau DeMayo shared his unique insights on the actual events that transpired while creating the show X-Men ’97, via platform X.

To set the record straight regarding some aspects at #wondercon, it’s important to clarify that neither I nor Jake Castorena had any involvement in the writing of #xmen97. This fact leaves me equally puzzled as to why he was chosen to write the foreword for the upcoming Making of Book. The only individual who ever contributed a line to a script during that time was Chase Conley, with his famous quote being “Minds…

It’s surprising that Jake Castorena didn’t contribute to the writing of #xmen97, considering he’s penning the foreword for the upcoming Making of Book. The only person who ever added a line in a script was Chase Conley – “Minds are more difficult to bend than metal.” (Beau DeMayo)

Jake Castorena is currently overseeing production for ‘X-Men 97’, a role he retained following Beau Demayo’s dismissal in March 2024. Now, Beau has criticized both Jake and Marvel Studios, alleging that they are attempting to alter the truth about events that transpired backstage.

Once more, it seems like Marvel Studios and Jake Castorena are attempting to manipulate history and capitalize on the talents of Julia Lewald (writer of X-Men 97) and Larry Houston (director of the ’90s X-Men series), all while using them unknowingly for their own purposes, much like they attempted to claim credit for Magneto’s demise.

Beau’s assertions represent the most recent round of allegations towards Marvel Studios and The Walt Disney Company, following his dismissal from the show. Earlier, Beau hinted at disclosing Marvel’s practices in a court of law, as he felt mistreated during the production process.

Beau DeMayo has maintained frequent contact with fans of the show after he left, as many express their wish for him to contribute to the second season and share his ideas about the series’ future direction. Yet, there are also some doubters who question whether the director might be overlooking any missteps he may have made off-camera.

Beau DeMayo also provided further information about the appearance of Peter Parker (aka Spider-Man) in the series, which was less sensationalistic but still significant. After being let go from the production, his cameo was included in the final version of the show, offering fans a resolution to the long-running Spider-Man series that previously ended on a cliffhanger.

As a storyteller, it’s been my intention since the beginning to introduce Peter Parker as a character, given that I wanted the audience to understand that he had reconnected with Mary Jane (MJ) in the 90s series.

Many fans have eagerly wished for a new Spider-Man TV series, much like the one from the ’90s that was shown on Fox Kids, to be produced, similar to X-Men 97. Yet, it appears that Beau won’t be involved in any future superhero project at Marvel, despite numerous requests for his return.

The specific events surrounding the contentious production of X-Men ’97 are gradually coming to light, but it appears that Mr. DeMayo is determined to share his version of the truth with the public.
