X-Men ‘97 Creator Beau DeMayo Says Marvel Removed Credits Over Gay Fan Art

As a fervent admirer of Beau DeMayo‘s creative prowess and unwavering dedication to his craft, I find myself deeply troubled by this unfolding saga. The sheer audacity of Marvel, a company that prides itself on inclusivity and diversity, to strip DeMayo’s credits after he boldly stood up for love and acceptance, is nothing short of ironic.

As the creator of the iconic ‘X-Men ’97’, I’ve got a story to share about my recent experiences with Marvel. A few weeks back, I proudly posted some fan art depicting a powerful image of LGBTQ+ representation for Pride Month on Instagram. This piece, featuring me as Cyclops, was warmly received by fans.

A short while later, the studio countered with their own assertions, particularly concerning DeMayo’s actions. “Mr. DeMayo was dismissed in March 2024 after an internal probe,” stated a Marvel representative to THR. “Given the severe nature of the results, we ended our relationship with him promptly, and he holds no more connections with Marvel.”

Initially, it was said that he was let go prior to the debut of the first season, even though he had previously worked on the show’s second season. The exact cause for his initial separation wasn’t disclosed at the time, but Marvel Studios executive Brad Winderbaum told Entertainment Weekly that it wasn’t a firing, but rather they had simply “parted ways.” He further clarified, “I can’t discuss the specifics, but I can say that Beau held genuine respect and enthusiasm for these characters and wrote scripts that, in my opinion, were excellent. These scripts provided inspiration for the rest of the team to create the fantastic show that we see on screen today.”

As a movie enthusiast, I’d like to share my thoughts on a recent Instagram exchange between artists Jneyde and DeMayo. In a heartfelt post, Jneyde expressed solidarity with DeMayo, stating: “I was the one who created the fanart for Beau, acknowledging his outstanding work in X-Men and Pride Month. I’m disheartened to see Marvel, a company that claims to champion inclusivity, take such an action. Rest assured, myself and countless fans will continue to support you.”
