Writers Guild of America West Staff Wins Union Recognition With 81% Support

I’m thrilled to share that I, along with my fellow colleagues, have successfully secured voluntary recognition from the Writers Guild of America West for our newly formed bargaining unit. This achievement comes as a result of over 81% of us expressing our support by signing cards. It’s an incredible feeling knowing we stand united in our pursuit of fair representation and better working conditions.

As a cinephile, I’m excited to share that our team at WGA West, numbering 110 strong, will be represented in negotiations by the Pacific Northwest Staff Union. Instead of going for a formal vote, our leadership opted for a card-check process, which means we’ve collectively shown support for this union recognition without needing to cast ballots.

Doug MacIsaac, a WGA operations coordinator, expressed his enthusiasm about reaching an accord on our initial request, which he believes is a significant stride towards gaining influence in enhancing our work environment and organizing without the threat of retaliation. He also shared his satisfaction with the opportunity to voice our concerns and anticipates engaging in discussions for our first collective bargaining agreement.

Doug MacIsaac, a WGA operations coordinator, is happy that we’ve agreed on our first demand because it means we can work together to make our workplace better without fear of being punished. He’s also excited about having the chance to speak up for ourselves and is looking forward to discussing our first contract agreement.

The union encompasses all workers within the guild, whether they’re in sections dealing with royalties, agreements, public relations, studies, or the WGA theater.

The Pacific Northwest Labor Union, which includes employees from the L.A. County Federation of Labor and various chapters of the International Service Employees Union, as well as other union staff, orchestrated a 12-day strike against SEIU Local 2015 in Los Angeles during 2022. This local union represents long-term care workers.

Genevieve Gonsal, a WGA contracts coordinator, expressed in her statement that come May 1st, she’ll celebrate her 25-year milestone with the guild. “What an incredible voyage it’s been!” she exclaimed.

She expressed her gratitude to be involved in the groundbreaking establishment of the WGSU and looked forward to the opportunities that lie ahead. Toast to unity, advancement, and the forthcoming chapter!

WGA East employees are already represented, as are employees of SAG-AFTRA.
