The world stone skimming championships are facing controversy after some competitors were caught using stones that appeared unnaturally round, raising suspicions of cheating.
Most people have tried skipping stones, but only the truly skilled – those who can get multiple skips – qualify for the world championships.
The 2025 championships are facing some issues. According to the BBC, several of the 2,200 participants were caught using stones that appeared unusually round, giving them an unfair advantage by making them skip across the water more easily.
The rules state that stones used must be natural island slate and small enough to fit through a special tool called the “ring of truth.” This ensures they are no larger than three inches across.
“Stone doctoring” hits world stone skimming championship
Dr. Kyle Mathews, the championships organizer, said the individuals involved admitted to cheating and apologized, according to BBC News.
“There was a little bit of stone doctoring,” he told BBC Radio’s Good Morning Scotland.
It was a perfect circle, exactly three inches across, so we initially didn’t suspect anything was wrong. Being metal, it seemed unlikely to be the source of the issue. The real problem was we didn’t realize how unusually circular it was at the time.
Jonathan Jennings from the United States won the competition with a total stone-skimming distance of 177 meters.

Every year, they put on this amazing event to raise money for our community. It’s awesome because all the proceeds go to local projects and charities that really make a difference where we live!
Despite the cheating that occurred this year, the organizers promised an even bigger and better event next year.
