From the moment I first stepped foot into this fantastical realm as a young adventurer, I was instantly captivated by its rich lore, engaging gameplay, and most importantly, the sense of camaraderie that it fosters among its players.
Today marks the 20th anniversary of World of Warcraft’s inception, specifically November 23, 2024. In this article, we’ll delve into the experiences of the game’s pivotal creators as they reflect on their journey that shaped World of Warcraft into the phenomenon it is today, and glimpse into what lies ahead for its future.
Twenty years ago, World of Warcraft made its debut, transforming the gaming industry significantly. What was once a narrow MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game) niche suddenly went mainstream. Blizzard took existing concepts from games like Everquest and improved, polished, and expanded upon them to create something that would appeal to a wide audience. The end product, “WoW,” became a term familiar in households and a cultural sensation, with millions of players still subscribing $15 per month to carry on their digital journeys within the fantasy realm of Azeroth today.
Over the past 20 years since its initial release on November 23, 2004, World of Warcraft (WoW) has undergone significant changes, despite technically remaining the same game. The current version of this MMO is almost unrecognizable compared to its original form. For instance, the latest expansion, “The War Within,” introduced account-wide progression and a new endgame activity for solo players – concepts that were inconceivable just a decade ago but have been warmly embraced by the gaming community.
2019 saw Blizzard introducing “Classic” editions of World of Warcraft, catering to players who wanted to relive the game’s early days up to the first few expansions. This was a response to fan-made unofficial recreations that had been popular for years. Today, there are five distinct versions of WoW available, demonstrating the significant footprint and enduring popularity of Blizzard’s MMORPG in the gaming landscape. Remarkably, many contemporary live-service games struggle to last a few months, let alone years, yet Blizzard manages to thrive with five simultaneous iterations of World of Warcraft (WoW Classic, Season of Discovery, Cataclysm Classic, WoW Classic Hardcore, The War Within), enjoying continued success in each.
To commemorate World of Warcraft’s 20th anniversary, TopMob interviewed key developers from the WoW team to gather their insights on what sets Azeroth apart, why the game has remained popular for so long, and how they are strategizing for the next two decades.
For executive producer Holly Longdale, the familiarity – which allows players who might have played many years ago to return and still recognize the game – is crucial for its long-term success. The team works hard to ensure that World of Warcraft maintains its consistency over time, whether it’s in terms of the game’s appearance, themes, or even something as minor as its humorous quest text.
Longdale expressed a profound sentiment: “Coming home holds an extraordinary power,” he stated. “Our aim is to make it a familiar, cherished spot, even if you haven’t visited for six, seven, or 15 years. We want it to be the place that sparks your memories and rekindles the love you felt when you first discovered it.
Due to this fact, World of Warcraft (WoW) isn’t likely to undergo significant graphic or artistic updates in the near future, as this is a topic Blizzard gets asked about frequently. In her words, it would represent an unnecessary risk.
Additionally, she had no qualms about acknowledging that World of Warcraft (WoW) held an edge over modern MMORPGs only starting out now; in numerous aspects, it was indeed the pioneer.
In simpler terms, Longdale stated, “Since we were the pioneers in this specific type of game, which emerged from a niche genre that wasn’t popular yet and eventually became mainstream, we have an edge. We fully appreciate this advantage and understand its significance.
To ensure no player is overlooked, Blizzard is examining strategies for satisfying the diverse groups that make up World of Warcraft (WoW), going forward. This includes regular content updates, a practice initiated since the 2022 Dragonflight expansion, as past periods without updates have historically not been successful. Furthermore, it involves adopting a data-driven methodology to comprehend how players engage with the game, along with considering their feedback.
She used the game’s roleplaying community as an example of an area where Blizzard “could absolutely do better.” She said the recent Netflix documentary, The Remarkable Life of Ibelin, “sparked a fire” in the team to do more. The documentary tells the story of Mats Steen, a WoW player who suffered from Duchenne’s muscular dystrophy but found comfort within Azeroth as part of a roleplaying community. Much of the film is animated using WoW’s in-game assets, but also shows characters doing things in-game, like fully animated hugs or high-fives, that aren’t currently possible in WoW. She said the team is now doing testing to see if those kinds of interactions could be added in the future.
Ion Hazzikostas, a long-term director of World of Warcraft (WoW), shared his insights on why the game has remained popular over the years. He used the factions as a benchmark to illustrate how far the game has progressed and continues to adapt. For most of its existence, the choice between playing as a Horde or Alliance character significantly influenced a player’s journey – determining who they could team up with, where they could embark on quests, and the narrative they followed. By 2024, this is generally no longer the norm. Hazzikostas noted that the concept of Horde and Alliance players working together, which was once considered impossible, has become a reality in the modern version of the game for certain activities.
Hazzikostas stated that if you had consulted the development team earlier, they would have firmly denied any possibility of change regarding this matter. However, he emphasized that with the Alliance and Horde now frequently cooperating, the essence of Warcraft remains unchanged.
He said the strength of the community–the bonds, friendships, and families that have been forged in Azeroth–is a large reason why WoW continues to thrive. It’s that same community that pushes the game forward, encouraging Blizzard to adapt to the changing demands of its playerbase.

20 years have passed since World of Warcraft’s initial release, and we’ve reached our 10th expansion. The game has evolved significantly enough that it’s possible for us to launch distinct Classic versions, each with its unique feel, tempo, and appealing to diverse groups of players. I believe this demonstrates just how much the game and its community have transformed together over time. Hazzikostas pointed out that the release of World of Warcraft on November 23, 2004 was a special moment for many, as it introduced a new world and the opportunity to connect with others. If we hadn’t adapted alongside our players, we wouldn’t still be here today.
After two decades, Longdale emphasized that World of Warcraft (WoW) needs to adapt in line with the community’s preferences, as Blizzard is now prioritizing understanding and catering to their playerbase. Part of her responsibilities involve planning for WoW’s future, considering where it might be in the next 10, 15, or even 20 years, and establishing the necessary groundwork for its continued growth. Despite being two decades old, World of Warcraft is not showing signs of slowing down or giving up its position as the top MMORPG anytime soon.
