‘World of Warcraft’ at 20: Blizzard Team on Milestone Anniversary Plans, Bringing in New Players and the Potential for a Movie Do-Over

As a seasoned observer of the gaming industry, I must say that the trajectory of Blizzard Entertainment under the leadership of J. Allen Brack, as depicted in this article, is nothing short of inspiring. His unwavering commitment to fostering a creative and healthy work environment, coupled with his strategic vision for the future of “World of Warcraft,” makes him an ideal figurehead in the ever-evolving world of video games.

20 years ago today, Blizzard Entertainment’s team unveiled their massive multiplayer online game based on the “Warcraft” series, and it significantly reshaped the gaming world as we know it. Since then, numerous MMOs have been inspired by “World of Warcraft,” attracting a younger demographic to the genre. However, the impact of this groundbreaking game that necessitated a large customer support team to manage the influx of players trying to access overloaded servers since its debut remains undeniable even after two decades.

The gaming world has evolved from a small subculture to a full-fledged lifestyle, and ‘World of Warcraft’ plays a significant role in this shift,” says Holly Longdale, executive producer of ‘World of Warcraft’, to EbMaster. “It’s not only about the gameplay, but also about the connections you build outside of it. You interact with your guilds, spend time with friends while playing, or arrange sessions to play together. Our goal is to encourage this experience in a positive and enjoyable manner, and make Azeroth accessible to everyone.

Longdale, who became a part of Blizzard, a game developer, in 2020, shortly before Microsoft’s purchase of Activision Blizzard, currently manages the “WoW” series. This includes supervising the development of the current expansion, “The War Within,” as well as the operation of the “World of Warcraft Classic” game. With a career spanning two decades in the gaming industry, Longdale comes from Disney studios and previously served as executive producer for “EverQuest” and “EverQuest II,” which are competitors to “World of Warcraft.

Over the last 20 years, “World of Warcraft” has attracted over 240 million players across ten modern expansions and the “World of Warcraft Classic”. To celebrate this significant milestone, the team led by Longdale started planning an in-game event called the “Worldsoul Saga” over a year ago. They’ve lined up both online and offline events to commemorate this occasion, which will extend through January.

Blizzard president Johanna Faries remarks on the ‘World of Warcraft’ reaching its anniversary, stating it represents two decades of shared online experiences and enduring friendships. ‘Warcraft’, she explains, transcends the realm of a simple game; it has left an indelible impact on both players and developers, becoming a cultural icon over the years. The fervor displayed by the players as they embark on this journey with us never ceases to amaze her. She is equally proud of the ‘Warcraft’ teams for their consistent innovation, continually crafting rich and captivating realms that players can call their own.

To date, the team’s initiatives outside the standard operations have been quite diverse. They range from a creative rebranding of the University of Washington as the University of Warcraft for a unique college football match, to the popular mobile game “Candy Crush,” another Microsoft-owned title, being overtaken by the Warcraft universe.

Longdale explains that while there are in-game events celebrating our 20th anniversary, it’s much more than just that. Last year, we launched the grand “Worldsoul Saga” with ‘The War Within’, which is actually a trilogy. This saga was our response to how we could mark the significance of our 20th anniversary – by crafting an epic tale encompassing the past two decades. Crafting this story required a great deal of focus and dedication.

Longdale emphasizes that the entire event is to celebrate the “World of Warcraft” (WoW) community, focusing on an inclusive approach known as “no player left behind,” which caters not only to longtime “Warcraft” enthusiasts but also to newcomers who may be considering the game during this significant milestone.

As a devoted movie buff speaking about World of Warcraft (WoW), I can say that it’s essential to welcome newcomers with open arms, especially when you’re dealing with a 20-year-old MMO. We shouldn’t underestimate the importance of creating smooth entry points to keep this game thriving for another two decades. Our team is diligently working on strategies to ensure WoW’s longevity.

Throughout the entirety, Blizzard’s newly acquired company has been keeping a distance, allowing the brand to fully bloom during “World of Warcraft’s” significant milestone, giving it ample space to shine independently.

Matt Booty, President of Gaming Content and Studios at Xbox, has expressed appreciation for the consistent pace of content they’ve maintained over the past year,” (paraphrased)

Booty expresses, “We’ve not only been excited about owning ‘Warcraft’, but also about learning from its success. It’s like we’re students studying its management techniques. And it’s an honor for us to be among the billion-dollar intellectual properties that we now possess.

In the future planning for “World of Warcraft”, Microsoft could play a significant role in shaping the transmedia strategy. As suggested by Booty and Longdale, there’s a chance another “Warcraft” movie may be considered following the less-than-successful 2016 film.

Longdale expresses that everything is on the table, as we’re in an era of high enthusiasm and exploration for the next two decades. We’re keeping an open mind regarding various opportunities that might present themselves, without specifically committing to any of them yet.

Following the triumph of Amazon’s television series version of the “Fallout” game franchise from Bethesda Game Studios, and the excitement building for the upcoming “A Minecraft Movie,” Microsoft is showing a growing interest in transforming other video games it owns into television shows and movies.

When it comes to something like this, Booty emphasizes the importance of careful consideration because there’s no guaranteed success. Each project requires thoughtfulness. In our case, with the interest in linear media, we see parallels to the popularity of video games, comic books, and Hollywood over the past decade. There’s certainly a demand for us. However, the key factor is whether our game team believes their creation could translate well into a linear format. Not every game is suitable for this transformation. We always prioritize the team first and strive to find a compatible partner. These projects need time, and we want to ensure a harmonious collaboration between the game team and the linear team with a clear vision for the final product.

The 20th anniversary of “World of Warcraft” arrives following the publication of Jason Schreier’s book, “Play Nice: The Ascension, Decline, and New Horizons of Blizzard Entertainment.” This work offers a comprehensive overview of Blizzard’s early years and claims of a male-dominated culture within the gaming industry over time. As Longdale seeks to attract new “WoW” players and keep existing ones, she aims to emphasize that women are welcomed at present-day Blizzard, an organization now led by Johanna Faries.

Throughout my career, I’ve been incredibly lucky to work under supportive superiors and colleagues, and have always been treated with respect,” Longdale expresses. “This is no different at Blizzard. I’m fortunate to hold an exceptional role, and I’m surrounded by a team of women leaders who are courageous, daring, and respected. We’re in a good position now, but we strive for improvement. Yes, there’s always room for growth, but our dedication is towards fostering a dynamic, healthy, strong, and creative work environment. I haven’t encountered any signs of negativity here, and I believe we’re laying the groundwork for an exciting and daring future.
