In simpler terms, the game World of Tanks allows players to participate in virtual war scenarios. However, the actual conflict between Russia and Ukraine has raised concerns as Lesta Games, the Russian company responsible for the game, is accused of unlawfully transferring funds from the game to Ukraine, leading to legal charges against them.
The creator of World of Tanks, WargamingUnited, departed from both Russia and Belarus due to Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. This company has also collected funds for Ukraine, an act considered illegal under present Russian law. However, it should be noted that Lesta Games, which handles the local rights for World of Tanks in Russia, maintains no ties with Wargaming. Despite this, control over Lesta Games was eventually taken by Russia.
According to PC Gamer, authorities in Moscow have seized Lesta Games’ assets and alleged that one of the company’s co-founders, Malik Khatazhaev, is linked to an “extremist organization” which may be under the influence of Wargaming CEO Viktor Kisly. The case appears to reference videos showing Wargaming’s support for Ukraine as evidence in court.
According to reports, Russian media is assuring World of Tanks players in the country that they won’t face arrest for spending money on the game, even if some of that money might have gone to Ukraine. Additionally, Anton Gorelkin, a deputy chairman of the Duma’s Information Technology Committee, has told players that the assets of Lesta Games are expected to be transferred to a Russian company specialized in such matters.
In my viewpoint as an avid gaming enthusiast, it’s worth mentioning again that the rights for World of Tanks game in Russia are exclusive to that nation. However, Wargaming maintains its World of Tanks assets and rights globally, outside of Russia. It’s important to note that Lesta Games isn’t the only developer grappling with the ongoing Ukraine conflict. Similarly, GSC Game World persevered in developing Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl, despite some team members leaving the country or choosing to stay and fight. This remarkable tale of resilience was beautifully documented by TopMob in their film, How Stalker 2 Survived a War.
