Don’t anticipate Wonder Man appearing in upcoming Avengers films like Doomsday or Secret Wars. According to a co-creator of the show, his story isn’t currently connected to the bigger picture of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The series centers on Simon Williams, an actor in Los Angeles trying to make it big. He lands an audition for a movie about Wonder Man, but has to keep a secret: he has superpowers. To help him hide them, he teams up with Trevor Slattery.
Despite being perhaps the most unconventional Marvel Studios show – focusing more on the world of filmmaking than traditional superhero action – Wonder Man turned out to be surprisingly compelling. Critics seem to agree, giving it a 91% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Even though critics loved it, Andrew Guest, the creator of Wonder Man, explains that the show doesn’t actually connect to the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe storyline.
Wonder Man showrunner says Marvel and Disney wants some projects to “exist separately” in the MCU
I was listening to The Watcher podcast, and they asked the Wonder Man showrunner, Andrew Guest, about potential crossovers with the wider MCU. He said right away that there weren’t any planned! Apparently, from the very beginning, Wonder Man was always meant to be its own thing, separate from any larger storylines. So, it looks like we probably won’t be seeing Wonder Man joining the Avengers anytime soon, which is a little disappointing, but I get that they want to keep it self-contained.
The show’s creator explained that Wonder Man is intended to be a standalone series, separate from the overarching narrative of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as part of a deliberate strategy by Marvel and Disney.
It’s understandable why the show takes a different approach. Unlike most Marvel series, it doesn’t feel the need to include an action scene in every episode. Instead, it prioritizes building the relationship between Simon and Trevor. According to the creator, Marvel recognized that audiences – both dedicated fans and newcomers – already had a lot of content to follow.
He explained that even four years ago, the company had considered splitting up some of its content. They recognized that a lot of the information was overwhelming and didn’t resonate with everyone, and they thought it might be better if different projects could stand on their own.
According to Guest, Marvel and Disney almost cancelled the Wonder Man project, but a small group of people managed to save it.
There was a point where it looked like we were going to get cancelled, honestly. The people making the game really had to fight to convince everyone it was worth sticking with, and thankfully they did!
