As a gamer with years of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a surge of inspiration and admiration upon hearing about Grete Lajal and Mariam Musa’s victories at the Sky Broadband Women’s Esports Finals. Their achievements are not just a testament to their skill, but also to their tenacity and resilience in breaking barriers and challenging stereotypes within the gaming world.
Grete Lajal and Mariam Musa emerged victorious in the Sky Broadband Women’s Esports Finals, excelling in the Racers Eseries and Football Eseries respectively. Their triumph not only secured them a portion of the £50,000 prize money but also lucrative professional contracts, marking this tournament as the first esports competition for women to offer both cash prizes and professional contracts.
After winning the Football Eseries title, Musa expressed, “Being the Football Eseries champion feels unbelievable; it seems almost surreal. It was incredible to see so many women display their skills at Sky. I’m excited about the backing from Guild Esports and Gaming. I hope to collaborate with their coaches, participate in additional tournaments, and continue to represent as a person of color, as breaking into this field can be quite challenging.
The tournament was created by Sky Broadband in collaboration with Guild Esports and Gaming with the aim to promote diversity and inclusion in gaming, following research that revealed that just 5% of professional gamers are women.
The competition was held at Sky’s London office, and could be watched on both Sky Sports and Guild Esports’ YouTube platform. Players Lajal and Musa, as part of their professional contracts, will gain access to elite resources, linking them with fellow professionals and sponsors. Additionally, the victorious duo will receive guidance from mentors, experts, and coaches to help advance their gaming careers further.

Upon triumphing in the Racers Eseries, Lajal expressed, “I’m overjoyed and taken aback! I had no idea what I was signing up for! I would have never imagined participating in a race like this if not for this event. I’m thrilled to have discovered a new pastime where I can consistently grow at the Sky Guild Gaming Centre. Today turned out great, but I know there are even greater things ahead.
In addition to their work agreements and a portion of the £50,000 prize money, both winners were also awarded 24 months of complimentary Sky Broadband service.
