Woman warns against viral cucumber salad trend after finger gets chopped off

As a responsible and experienced food enthusiast, I can’t help but feel a pang of sympathy for Angie, the unfortunate TikToker who lost part of her finger while trying to recreate the viral cucumber salad trend. It’s a stark reminder that not all trends are worth the risk, especially when it comes to kitchen gadgets like mandolins.

The cucumber salad trend has become one of the most viral food trends of 2024, even leading to a shortage of the vegetable and other ingredients in stores. But, one woman is warning viewers with a cautionary tale surrounding the trend that ended in her finger being chopped off.

Logan Moffitt, commonly referred to as ‘the cucumber guy’ on TikTok, has gained popularity due to his salad recipe posts. He now boasts over 6.5 million followers and 277 million likes across social media platforms, inspiring many to try out the unique cucumber-inspired dishes he demonstrates in his videos.

One woman, however, is not on board with the trend, having given herself “life-changing” injuries while attempting to recreate the viral cucumber salad.

Angie, a TikToker, shared that her situation took a turn for the worse when she tried to use a mandolin, similar to how Logan does in his content. A mandolin is a tool equipped with a sharp blade and flat surface, enabling users to quickly cut vegetables.

Unfortunately, during the process, she ended up deeply injuring her pinky finger: “I essentially removed a whole side of my pinky,” she explained. “They told me that due to the severe extent of the injury, there wasn’t enough tissue left for them to stitch it back together because the skin had been completely severed.

The situation deteriorated further and further, leading her to eventually acquire an infection due to the wound. This is equivalent to saying, “The pain I felt shooting up my whole arm felt like a bolt of lightning.

Following another trip to the emergency room, she learned that the infection had progressed to her bone. She disclosed that this development had caused her to lose sensation in her finger, and subsequently, she was referred to a specialist in hand care.

Despite only using a simple cucumber slicer, she’s facing thousands of dollars in medical bills. This situation has made her realize the importance of her little finger, as it’s currently not functioning properly. That’s her current predicament.

Viewers seemed unforgiving, expressing their disapproval by stating she shouldn’t have mentioned Logan in her video. To set the record straight, she expressed regret for any misunderstanding and clarified that the tool she used wasn’t ‘Logan’s cucumber cutter’, but rather a mandolin, which is causing some debate among commenters.

“I’m sorry, calling a MANDOLIN a ‘cucumber cutting device’ is wild,” another wrote.

It has been observed in his latest videos that Logan has been advising his audience to pay attention to the potential hazards associated with the mandolin.

Angie replied to the remark, stating: “I failed to spot it, and I regret not having seen it sooner! It turns out that I should have conducted my own research rather than relying on a two-minute video. That’s what I get for overlooking the risks associated with this product, as well as the number of incidents where people have been injured by it.

Instead of saying “The viral cucumber salad isn’t the first trend to stir up controversy on social media,” you could also say “The popular cucumber salad isn’t the first trend to spark debate online.” Or, more casually, “The viral cucumber salad isn’t a new kind of online argument starter.
