In the Marvel Universe, Mutants are depicted as the next step in human evolution. Although people can gain superpowers in various ways, Mutants are unique because they’re born with their abilities. But the new X-Men series, Generation X-23, has introduced a different kind of Mutant with an unexpected connection to Wolverine’s history.
Generation X-23, created by Jody Houser and illustrated by Jacopo Camagni, focuses on the Marvel character Laura Kinney. Originally believed to be a clone of Wolverine (Logan), she was later discovered to be his biological daughter, conceived through the work of Sarah Kinney. After Logan’s death, Laura eventually took on the mantle of Wolverine herself.
The first issue of Generation X-23 started with Laura and her sister, Gabby (also known as Scout), hunting down a mysterious Mutant. They discovered the Mutant was a young girl who reminded Laura of her close friend, Kiden Nixon. This girl then led them to a peculiar lab containing several other Mutant children.
It’s not surprising that Wolverine and Scout both had strong feelings about the situation, considering where they grew up. But things got really interesting when it turned out the young mutants weren’t being held captive – and they actually knew who Laura Kinney was!
What are Marvel’s new form of Mutants?
Wolverine discovered the children didn’t have actual names, but were known by numbers like X-66 and X-99. Their lab, called Facility 23, was, according to the children’s leader, X-Infinite, named to commemorate either a major achievement or a disastrous mistake. This revealed that the people in charge of Facility 23 were also responsible for the experiments that created Laura Kinney and Scout. The children managed to free themselves after one of them unintentionally killed the scientists who ran the facility.
These children with mutant abilities weren’t born with them like the X-Men. They were created in a lab using genetic material from existing mutants. Because they were fundamentally different from both humans and natural mutants, the organization X-Infinite called them “the Generated.”
The Generated are theoretically stronger than Mutants because they possess at least two different sets of powers. For example, X-66 can read minds and transform into a flying, bird-like creature. Unfortunately, most Generated individuals proved to be fragile and didn’t survive rigorous training. Wolverine has offered to help train them in self-defense, but it’s uncertain if this new group of powered individuals will be able to endure.
