Without a ‘Barbenheimer,’ AMC Entertainment Reports $20.7 Million Quarterly Loss

As a seasoned moviegoer who has witnessed the evolution of cinema over the past few decades, I must admit that the recent financial struggles of AMC Entertainment have piqued my interest. Having grown up with blockbusters like “Deadpool & Wolverine” and “Twisters,” it’s disheartening to see a decline in their box office success.

During the latest quarter, AMC Entertainment, known for showing summer hits like “Deadpool & Wolverine” and “Twisters”, reported a loss of $20.7 million – a stark contrast to the $12.3 million profit it made during the same timeframe last year. This means that instead of making a profit, they incurred a significant loss compared to the previous year.

Concurrently, AMC’s revenue decreased by 4.1% to reach $1.3 billion, a drop from the $1.4 billion reported during the same period last year. This previous timeframe featured the simultaneous releases of “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer,” two films that boosted box office sales considerably and gave rise to the popular “Barbenheimer” meme. In contrast, AMC reported a loss of 7 cents per share in this quarter, as opposed to earnings of 8 cents during the same period last year.

The theater chain experienced a decrease in attendance, going from 73.6 million visitors to 65.1 million, due to a weaker selection of films. Ticket sales dropped from $798 million to $744.2 million, however, revenue from concessions increased slightly, rising from $482.7 million to $490.4 million.

Movies launched in the three-month span concluding in September comprised titles like “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” and “Alien: Romulus.” AMC’s CEO, Adam Aron, has expressed optimism about the movie industry, predicting that 2023 will feature sequels for well-known franchises such as “Jurassic World,” “Mission: Impossible,” “Captain America,” and “Avatar.

While our third quarter results for 2024 fell slightly short of last year’s figures, Aron emphasized in a statement that we are extremely optimistic about the outstanding lineup of films set to premiere in our cinemas from November and December 2024, and extending into 2025 and 2026. Given current insights, we anticipate that the overall box office will experience significant growth towards the end of this year and will continue to increase for the following two years.
