Fans have been eagerly awaiting the anime adaptation of Kamome Shirahama’s work, and it’s almost here! It’s perfectly timed for those who enjoyed the recent finale of another popular fantasy series. Get ready to be captivated by a stunning new world with a truly unique and imaginative magic system.
Crunchyroll has confirmed that Witch Hat Atelier will now premiere in Spring 2026, following some production delays that pushed back the original 2025 release. To build excitement, they’ve also announced a few surprises to celebrate the start of this popular fantasy series, which has sold over 7.5 million copies of the manga worldwide.
When Will Witch Hat Atelier Premiere on Crunchyroll?
The exact number of episodes for the Witch Hat Atelier anime hasn’t been announced yet. But, because it took a long time to produce and the trailers look great, fans who have read the manga are guessing it will have 24 episodes, possibly split into two parts. They believe the anime will adapt the ‘Great Hall Arc,’ which starts around chapter 30 in volume 6 of the manga.
Crunchyroll showed the anime in some U.S. cinemas as part of its Anime Nights events. Recently, they announced that the first two episodes will premiere together on Monday, April 6th, at 10:00am Eastern Time / 7:00am Pacific Time. Both episodes will also be available to stream on the same day.
Witch Hat Atelier is the Most Captivating Fantasy Anime of 2026
Witch Hat Atelier is a unique work that explores complex ideas like the problems with established systems, the risks of unchecked knowledge, and what happens when power falls into the wrong hands. Despite these mature themes, the central storyline with its main characters closely resembles the typical plots found in shojo and shonen anime.
Coco always wished she could be a witch, but she didn’t have the natural talent. Everything changed when she met Qifrey, a powerful witch, who revealed a surprising truth: magic isn’t just about being born with a gift – anyone can learn to cast spells with the right knowledge and tools.
Coco received a strange book and pen as a child, which allowed her to perform magic, but with significant consequences. Now aware of the danger and determined to fix a terrible error, she begins training as an apprentice under Qifrey.
The story of Witch Hat Atelier is both comforting and captivating, with moments of darkness. Coco builds close, sisterly relationships with her fellow apprentices at Qifrey’s workshop, and Qifrey acts as both a teacher and a father figure to them all. As the story progresses, the mysteries at the heart of Witch Hat Atelier are revealed, and they prove to be deeply upsetting.
Coco grows up hearing about the dangers and troubled past of magic, but she still loves it deeply. This inspires her to learn everything she can about magic, hoping to use it to improve the world. Witch Hat Atelier is a story that explores mature themes without relying on gore, offering a beautiful and thoughtful look at the responsibility that comes with wielding powerful magic and choosing to use it for good.
BUG FILMS has Set High Expectations for Witch Hat Atelier

Originally planned for a 2025 release, Studio BUG FILMS decided to postpone production to focus on making the anime the best it can be. Each new trailer and preview released by Crunchyroll suggests the wait will be worthwhile. So far, the adaptation appears to be capturing the thrilling and captivating essence of Shirahama’s passionate fantasy world.
The anime Witch Hat Atelier boasts a talented creative team, including director Ayumu Watanabe, known for Summer Time Rendering and Komi Can’t Communicate. Ryota Goto (Suzume) handled art direction, and Naomi Nakano (The Summer Hikaru Died) was responsible for color design. The evocative medieval fantasy atmosphere is further enhanced by the music composed by Yuka Kitamura, whose previous works include Elden Ring and Bloodborne.
The Witch Hat Atelier Production Crew also Includes:
- Assistant Director: Shun Shinohara (Heavenly Delusion and Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead)
- Series Composition Writer: Hiroshi Seko (Dandadan and Jujutsu Kaisen)
- Character Design & Chief Animation Director: Kairi Unabara (Spy x Family Season 3 and The Heike Story)
- Director of Photography: Tadashi Kitaoka (Love Live! Superstar!! and Burst Angel)
While the animation doesn’t quite capture the delicate beauty of the original manga’s art style, and some character designs are a bit simpler, BUG FILMS has done a great job of bringing the story and characters to life. The animation is visually impressive, standing alongside the best episodes of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End.
