‘Winter’s Bone’ Director Debra Granik to Head Venice Horizons Jury, Taylor Russell Joins First Works Jury Panel

As a seasoned movie critic with over two decades of experience under my belt, I am thrilled to share my perspective on this year’s esteemed juries at the Venice Film Festival. The diversity and richness of backgrounds among the Horizons jury members are truly inspiring. Debra Granik, an Oscar-nominated director known for her gritty and authentic storytelling in films like “Winter’s Bone,” will preside over this section dedicated to more cutting-edge works.

Debra Granik, a renowned American filmmaker who has been nominated for an Oscar (“Winter’s Bone”), will serve as the head judge for the innovative and avant-garde films category at the Venice Film Festival, known as Horizons (Orizzonti).

The Horizons jury will include Granik, joined by Iranian writer-director-producer Ali Asgari (“Terrestrial Verses”), Syrian filmmaker Soudade Kaadan (“The Day I Lost My Shadow”), Greek director, screenwriter, and producer Christos Nikou (“Apples”), Swedish actress and filmmaker Tuva Novotny (“Britt-Marie Was Here”), Hungarian filmmaker Gábor Reisz (“Explanation for Everything”), and Italian screenwriter and director Valia Santella (“I Can See It in Your Eyes”).

As a passionate film enthusiast with a soft spot for Italian cinema, I’m thrilled to share some exciting news. Renowned Italian critic Gianni Canova has been announced as the jury head for the prestigious “Luigi de Laurentiis” award at the Venice Film Festival. This esteemed accolade is bestowed upon the best first work across all sections of the festival, and comes with a substantial prize money of $100,000.

As a film enthusiast with a deep appreciation for the art of storytelling and the craft of cinema, I find it truly exhilarating to witness the diverse range of talents joining Canova on the Venice Film Festival jury for best first works.

As previously announced, Isabelle Huppert will preside over the main Venice jury.

Starting from August 28 and lasting until September 7, the 81st Venice Film Festival will take place. The complete list of films to be showcased will be revealed on July 23.
