As a follower of Hollywood gossip, I must admit that the friendship between Winona Ryder and Keanu Reeves has always been a fascinating tale. Their supposed “marriage” from the set of “Dracula” back in 1992 still brings a smile to my face. It’s like they’re living out their own real-life romantic comedy!
Back in the early ’90s, while filming “Dracula” under the guidance of the esteemed Francis Ford Coppola, I found myself sharing quite a bit with Keanu Reeves. Now, fast forward three decades, and it appears that our friendship has evolved into something more playful and affectionate. On text messages, we often refer to each other as husband and wife – a charming little inside joke between us. This delightful tidbit was shared during an appearance on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast. Although our on-set nuptials in 1992 may have been merely for fun and never legally binding, it’s heartening to see that our bond has stood the test of time.
In the 1992 gothic horror movie, the two actors portrayed Jonathan and Mina Harker. During a press tour for their romantic comedy “Destination Wedding” in 2018, they mentioned that actual priests were involved during the filming of their wedding scene in “Dracula”. Hence, it’s been known since then that Ryder and Reeves could be married, and they’ve embraced this fact.
“Ryder indicated that she’d go to great lengths while collaborating with Reeves. She described him as very unique, adding that a ‘John Wick’ film might not appeal to her since it requires many dangerous stunts and she prefers to protect her bones.”
Ryder mentioned that she continues to frequently message Reeves and they always make it a point to identify themselves in their texts, even though the recipient’s name is already included. For example, on Reeves’ birthday, Ryder would write: “Happy birthday, my husband.” To which Reeves would respond with something like, “Hey, my wife, I love you.” This has been a consistent practice for each of their birthdays, where Reeves would acknowledge the sender’s role in his life.
During an interview with Entertainment Weekly in 2018, Ryder casually mentioned that she might be legally wedded to Reeves, stating: “We apparently got married during ‘Dracula’. I swear on my life, I believe we’re actually married in real life. In the filming of the master scene, Francis used a genuine Romanian priest. So, I strongly suspect we are indeed married.”
Later on, Reeves clarified that he wasn’t entirely sure about filming the wedding scene at first, but he later acknowledged: “We filmed an entire take of a marriage ceremony with genuine priests. Winona said it was so, Coppola said it was so, so I guess we were married in the presence of God.”
Beyond their roles in “Dracula” and “Destination Wedding,” Ryder and Reeves additionally appeared together in Richard Linklater’s film, titled “A Scanner Darkly.”
In her “Happy Sad Confused” interview, Ryder also shared insights about another acting partner who left a lasting impression on her: Daniel Day-Lewis. They worked together in Martin Scorsese’s 1993 drama “The Age of Innocence,” which earned Ryder an Oscar nomination for the category of best supporting actress.
In the interview for ‘Age of Innocence’, Daniel Day-Lewis offered me the most valuable tip as we were both experiencing similar situations at the time, Ryder explained. He told me, “Just keep chatting so they can’t ask you questions…just go on and on.” I responded, “Wow!” It was somewhat amusing, but if you connect with someone, conversation just flows naturally for me.
