The GBI will be one main personnel down when Will Trent returns in season 5.
Since its premiere in 2023, Will Trent has stood out as a unique series. The show, based on Karin Slaughter’s books, continues to be a strong performer for ABC, consistently ranking among its most-watched programs when factoring in live and same-day DVR views. It’s also popular on Hulu, where new episodes are released the day after they air. For several seasons, Will Trent has maintained its core cast, allowing the actors to build great chemistry. However, that will change in the 2025-2026 television season.
With only a few episodes left in season 4 of Will Trent, both the characters’ personal lives and the main storylines are reaching critical points. In the episode “The Blank Expanse of Nothing,” Will’s search for Adelaide ended tragically when he finally confronted her after weeks of pursuit. Meanwhile, Amanda Wagner was secretly assisting the FBI in investigating the Commander, a shadowy figure connected to James Ulster’s cult. Sadly, her involvement led to disaster, as Will discovered her severely wounded on the street.
Showrunners Liz Heldens, Daniel T. Thomsen, and Karine Rosenthal recently told Variety that Amanda will die on the show and Sonja Sohn will not return for season 5 of Will Trent. They admitted it was hard to say goodbye to the character, who has been with the series from the beginning, but believe her departure will create exciting new storylines for Wilbur and the rest of the GBI. You can find their complete statements below.
According to Rosenthal, Amanda always looked out for Will, and her departure creates a significant shift within the GBI. Her replacement won’t share that same protective bond with him. Her death deeply affects many characters, leaving them devastated but also opening up new possibilities and storylines for Season 5. It’s a painful but necessary turning point for everyone involved.
Thomsen noted that it’s rare for anyone, even writers, to have complete control over how their work ends. He was particularly impressed with how gracefully someone handled a difficult departure, calling them a true professional.
I want to acknowledge the incredible work Sonja Sohn did with this character. I revisited the Season 1 finale recently, and her performance was flawless. It’s reassuring to know we have a way to bring actors back if the story requires it, like if Will needs to resolve something.
Amanda recently faced a life-threatening situation in the season 3 finale of Will Trent. After that episode, viewers had to wait through the entire summer and into the fall to find out what happened to her, especially since the show first aired in the winter, around the same time as The Rookie. The most recent episode of season 4 left Amanda’s fate uncertain, ending with Wilbur simply embracing his wounded boss and mentor. While fans hoped she would pull through, a recent interview now strongly suggests she didn’t survive her injuries.
The announcement that Will Trent would return for a fifth season came just days after Amanda’s character was killed off. While the show’s renewal was likely, given its popularity, the timing felt a little strange to some. Many wondered if the network deliberately released the renewal news around the same time as Sohn’s final episode aired.
This is the second time in recent weeks that ABC has used this type of dramatic storytelling. The season finale of High Potential also left viewers on the edge of their seats with a dangerous situation for Nick Wagner, and it was later confirmed that Steve Howey wouldn’t be a regular on the show anymore, hinting that his character could be killed off. However, with Will Trent, the death of Amanda is certain.
