I was optimistic that the movie “Avengers: Doomsday” would bring Thor and Loki back together, and now I strongly believe Marvel will follow through on this. However, it seems their reunion may come at a high price. The Asgardian siblings haven’t had any interaction since “Avengers: Infinity War,” where Loki was fatally killed after attempting to deceive and eliminate Thanos during the Black Order’s attack on Asgard. In his poignant last moments, Loki assures Thor that “the sun will shine upon us again.” Tragically, shortly after this promise, Thanos ends Loki’s life by crushing his windpipe. This was one of the few deaths in that movie that wasn’t a ruse.
Nonetheless, it was revealed in the first season of “Loki” that he would make a comeback three years later. After snatching the Space Stone during the Avengers’ Time Heist, Loki transformed into a variant who embarked on a journey to become a living Temporal Loom, responsible for reinstating and maintaining all the timelines of the multiverse. Given his past pledge to Thor, I have no doubt that this god-like Loki variant will be the one to reconcile with his brother in “Avengers: Doomsday”.

Their Names Were Revealed Alongside 25 Others
Marvel Studios began filming for the movie titled “Avengers: Doomsday” in March, as confirmed by a live broadcast which also unveiled the initial group of actors cast for “Avengers: Doomsday“. Some names were less unexpected, as the inclusion of Anthony Mackie and Robert Downey Jr. was anticipated. Interestingly, Chris Hemsworth was the first actor named, while Tom Hiddleston’s name followed later in the list of confirmed cast members. Although neither name is a shock, they do signify some notable implications.
As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I must say that Chris Hemsworth recently graced our screens as Thor in “Thor: Love and Thunder,” which hit theatres on July 7, 2022. Fast forward over a year, and it was Tom Hiddleston who reprised his iconic role as Loki in the second season of his self-named series in October 2023. This is where Loki’s MCU journey reached its peak, with him assuming the powerful godlike role of multiverse caretaker. Frankly, it would be a tremendous oversight if “Avengers: Doomsday” doesn’t seize this chance to bring these two characters back together in the same Marvel Cinematic Universe installment again. And it seems that Marvel may have dropped a hint that this will indeed happen.

Given that Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston were recently confirmed for “Avengers: Doomsday,” it seems undeniable to me that we’re in store for a reunion of sorts. However, this reunion might be intriguing since the Loki variant who controls multiple timelines has never had a genuine relationship with Thor beyond their tumultuous encounters in “The Avengers.” Although I’m confident it will evoke emotions, I don’t think it will all be smiles and laughter.

It Seems Inevitable That One Or Both Characters Will Die
Chris Hemsworth’s recent YouTube video carries a poignant sentiment, reminiscing warmly about his years portraying Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). In essence, it’s plausible that Avengers: Doomsday might lead to Doctor Doom gaining divine powers prior to Avengers: Secret Wars, and some speculate that this could lead to a confrontation between him and Loki. Given Loki’s history of frequent demises, it would mark a poignant reprisal for the beloved character.
It seems quite likely that the bright afterlife Jane Foster encountered in Asgard at the end of “Thor: Love and Thunder” is hinting at Loki’s claims about reunions in Valhalla. Regardless, Marvel appears to be preparing us for a heart-wrenching moment with the potential loss of two cherished characters from the MCU in the upcoming movie, tentatively titled “Avengers: Final Battle“.
