Requesting another installment of “Adolescence” essentially means requesting another fictional murder, albeit one that will ultimately be solved. Although it is not based on a single real event but rather inspired by multiple news stories in the UK, at present, it falls under the category of a mini-series akin to “Baby Reindeer“. However, its exploration of a recurring issue within youth culture opens up possibilities for a second season. As series co-creator and star Stephen Graham stated to Netflix, the central theme of the series is to question, “What is happening to our young men these days, and what are the pressures they face from their peers, from the internet, and from social media?” These pressures that young people experience here are as relevant globally as they are in other parts of the world.
Initially, Netflix planned Adolescence as a mini-series, but there’s a chance it could become a multi-season show. Just like how Beef was upgraded after receiving positive feedback, this could happen for other shows too, even those not produced by Netflix. For instance, HBO Max also expanded The White Lotus. If the creator of Adolescence, Graham, has more ideas for stories to tell, he might consider exploring Katie’s family’s perspective as a possible angle.
