The season 3 finale of Shrinking left viewers eager to know if the show will return for a fourth season. Fortunately, Bill Lawrence, the creator and showrunner, shared some encouraging news about the future of this popular series.

Like Bill Lawrence’s other popular shows, such as Ted Lasso and Scrubs, Shrinking blends humor and heartfelt moments. The series follows psychiatrist Jimmy (Jason Segel) as he navigates grief after losing his wife, all while working alongside fellow therapists. Though it’s a standout show on Apple TV+, the third season concludes with a feeling of finality, as Jimmy accepts what’s ahead and embarks on a new chapter in his life.

Harrison Ford’s character, Paul, urges Jimmy to move on from the past, bluntly telling him he can either remain stuck or create new experiences – even if they lead to pain. Will there be a Shrinking Season 4?

Apple TV+ has renewed “Shrinking” for a fourth season. The renewal happened just before Season 3 premiered. Jason Segel, who also created the show, told The Hollywood Reporter that the streaming service wanted to continue Jimmy’s story even as they were developing the third season.

We were working on Season 3 when Apple expressed interest in continuing the show. We then spoke with the cast to gauge their willingness to return. After that, we all discussed whether there was still a compelling story to tell.

Although a fourth season of Shrinking is confirmed, it won’t revisit Jimmy’s past grief. According to creator Bill Lawrence, the show will focus on what happens after he’s processed his wife’s death. He explained, “Starting the season with Jimmy getting emotional about his wife again would feel repetitive. Viewers would wonder why he’s revisiting something he seemingly worked through in the previous seasons.”

The showrunner didn’t share many details, but confirmed all the actors will be back for Season 4 of Shrinking. He hinted that the show will still center around Jimmy, and that the new season will feel like a fresh, different story, potentially even with a time jump.

Lawrence hinted that Jimmy’s storyline in Season 4 will focus on his journey of rebuilding his life and rediscovering himself. He also mentioned that he and the writers are currently planning the story arcs for the next two seasons.
