The introduction of the Nintendo Switch 2 provided some clarity regarding its release date, cost, and initial games lineup, but it also left several questions unanswered, particularly about whether the new system’s magnetic Joy-Con controllers may experience the same stick-drift issue that was prevalent in the original Switch controllers. Nintendo’s response didn’t fully allay those worries.
During a recent Q&A session with some of Nintendo’s top hardware developers, I, as an enthusiastic fan, inquired about the resolution of the stick drift issue in the new Joy-Con and Pro controllers for the upcoming Switch 2. Tetsuya Sasaki, the general manager of Nintendo’s technology and development, gave a brief response to my query.
According to Sasaki, it appears that the redesigned Joy-Con 2 controllers for the Nintendo Switch 2 were meticulously crafted anew, starting with a clean slate. The emphasis was placed on enhancing both their range and fluidity of motion.
The response implies that the updated Joy-Cons for the Switch 2 have been revamped, yet it fails to clarify whether or not the infamous stick-drift issue has been addressed. While a complete redesign might have potentially solved the problem, Nintendo didn’t explicitly confirm this in their statement.
As a gamer, I’ve noticed that the freshly unboxed Joy-Cons feel quite distinct from their predecessors in several significant aspects. They’re noticeably larger to accommodate the updated system dimensions, and instead of the old sliding mechanism, they now connect magnetically. What’s more, these new controllers can serve as mice when flipped sideways, a feature that comes in handy for games such as Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, Drag X Drive (the wheelchair basketball game), and Switch 2 Welcome Tour, among others.
