Will Smith's Fart Led To Men In Black Set Evacuation

As a die-hard fan of Will Smith, I’ve always admired his ability to bring charm and humor to every role he plays. But let me tell you, after hearing this hilarious story about him on the set of Men in Black, my respect for him has reached new heights!

Back in 1997, I transitioned from being a familiar face on TV and the music scene to becoming a bona fide movie star, thanks to my role in Men in Black alongside Tommy Lee Jones. This film was one of my initial blockbusters as the lead actor, but it wasn’t just my acting skills that left an impact – apparently, I also made quite an odorous impression on director Barry Sonnenfeld! As Sonnenfeld shared, a single fart from yours truly was enough to send the entire Men in Black set into temporary evacuation.

Sonnenfeld recounted the amusing incident during his appearance on Kelly Rippa’s SiriusXM podcast, Let’s Talk Off Camera. While filming the scene where Agent J (Smith) and Agent K (Jones) drove upside down through the Midtown tunnel, they were enclosed in a simulated car on set. It was during this time that Smith accidentally passed gas while both actors were confined inside.

According to Sonnenfeld, he overheard Will Smith exclaiming, “Oh, Jesus, I’m sorry, Tommy, I’m sorry, Baz, get the ladder,” to which Tommy responded, “It’s alright, Will. No problems, Will. Don’t worry, Will.

As Jones behaved politely towards his fellow actor, Sonnenfeld mentioned that the actor hurriedly made a dash down the staircase upon being released. This rush resulted in an evacuation of the entire stage that lasted for three hours.

In Sonnenfeld’s words, “It turned out that Will Smith is flatulent, a characteristic shared by some individuals. Being in a confined, air-tight space with a Will Smith flatulence is not an appealing prospect. Nor would you want to be seated next to him at the Disney ranch… He’s a charming person overall, but he does pass gas. Some people don’t, while others do.

As a gamer diving deep into the world of cinema, I followed up my initial Men in Black adventure with two more installments, starring none other than Will Smith and Jones. Not to mention, I teamed up with Smith again for The Wild Wild West. Recently, I’ve been sharing tales from the set with Smith, reminiscing about our times together, as part of my promotional efforts for my new book, Best Possible Place, Worst Possible Time, which hits shelves this very week.
