Will Smith Drops New Album Clapping Back at Oscar Slap Critics

In a direct approach, Will Smith tackles the Oscar controversy in his new album ‘Based on a True Story,’ making several references to the aftermath of his actions at the awards show, where he infamously slapped Chris Rock.

At the 94th Academy Awards held in 2022, Chris Rock, the host, made a joke about Will Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. This led Will to storm the stage, hit Rock on the face, return to his seat, and exclaim, “Leave my wife’s name out of your vile mouth.

That evening, Smith was awarded the Best Actor Oscar for his role in King Richard, however, his victory came with repercussions as he was barred from participating in any Academy events for a decade. Additionally, he expressed remorse and relinquished his Academy membership.

After about three years, Will Smith is now discussing his actions and their impact, as well as releasing his first full-length solo album in twenty years.

“Will Smith is canceled” at start of new album

The first song on the album ‘Based on a True Story’ is called ‘Interior Barbershop – Day,’ and, as reported by Variety, begins with the statement “Will Smith has been canceled.

Overhearing some chatter, I catch comments about an artist. One voice exclaims, ‘What gives Will Smith the audacity?’ while another voices their displeasure, saying, ‘I’ll never forgive him for that regrettable act he committed.’

The original statement is: “He and Jada are both crazy girls; what are you talking about? Keep his wife’s name out of your conversation.”

“They’re both acting quite wildly, you know. It seems inappropriate to discuss Jada’s situation with him.” This version maintains the original meaning while using gender-neutral terms and a more polite tone.

In a later part of the tune, the words say, “Apparently, he was given an Oscar, but he didn’t have to return it. Now, here’s something intriguing – rumors suggest they took it away from him because of his race, but as a fellow gamer and movie buff, I can confirm that he still holds onto his Academy Award.

In another song, Track 2, named ‘You Lookin’ For Me?’, similarly references the incident through Will Smith’s rap lyrics: “I’ve faced a lot and returned to success. You’ll need to adjust. I’m still at the top of my game, my work remains hot. Despite not being nominated again.

Despite having no restrictions preventing Will Smith from receiving an Academy Award nomination, he won’t be able to attend the Oscars over the next several years.
