As a seasoned gamer with countless hours spent chasing spectral entities across various platforms, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and anticipation as Phasmophobia finally makes its way onto consoles. The news about voice chat being supported from day one is a welcomed relief, allowing me to banter with my friends in real-time, adding an extra layer of immersion to our ghostly encounters.
Will Phasmophobia feature voice chat and voice recognition when it launches for consoles? This is a question many gamers are eagerly asking, and to address this curiosity, Kinetic Games have recently updated their Frequently Asked Questions section regarding voice chat and voice recognition on console versions of the game.
Starting right from the beginning, the consoles will allow voice communication. This means you can talk to your buddies, and while on a quest, even the specter can listen to you.
In case you didn’t catch it last week, we made some changes to a frequently asked question about voice communication and voice recognition, in relation to the forthcoming console launch of Phasmophobia.

Indeed, it’s confirmed that Phasmophobia includes voice chat right from the start. But there’s a small catch: at launch, the ghost, Spirit Box, Ouija Board, and Monkey Paw features won’t include voice recognition capabilities.
Essentially, the ghost can’t pick up on what players say, whether they’re using gadgets for ghost hunting or not. However, players can listen to their fellow ghost hunters’ voices. To simplify communication with the game, developers have provided a convenient preset text pop-up option that eliminates the need for typing. For instance, when employing a Ouija Board or Spirit Box, players will be presented with pre-written queries like “Are you friendly? Where are you? Is anyone there?” to interact more effortlessly.
In the computer edition of the game, there’s an option called “Preset Text Pop-up” that you can turn on or off at your convenience. This means players who don’t have a microphone can still play and engage with the game.
The team clarified in their FAQ that they’re currently focusing on a solution for the issue of poor voice recognition. However, they haven’t given a specific timeframe for when this feature might be implemented on consoles. As a stopgap measure, they’ve suggested using temporary in-game text menus. Since proper voice recognition is crucial for the game to operate effectively, it’s reasonable to expect that Kinetic Games will strive to incorporate it as soon as possible.
Phasmophobia, following some postponements, is due to debut on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S in October 2024. The game will retail for $19.99 upon release, a modest price bump compared to its earlier cost. To account for this pricing adjustment, which marks the first such change in the game’s history, developers point to extensive updates and novel features incorporated into the game over time.
