Will June Return in The Testaments? Exciting Update After Handmaid’s Tale Finale

The final episode of “The Handmaid’s Tale” Season 6 has aired, and the show’s creator, Bruce Miller, has been asked about Elisabeth Moss returning as June Osborne for “The Testaments”. Be aware, there might be spoilers!

In the tenth episode of Season 6, titled ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’, Mayday and the US government manage to free Boston from Gilead’s control; however, there’s more work ahead. June chooses to persevere in her struggle, with the ultimate goal of locating Hannah.

Following persuasion from Luke and Holly, June decides to write a book detailing her personal accounts. She then journeys to the Waterford’s former residence, starting an audio recording. The familiar sound of a tape being clicked mirrors that heard in the premiere episode of The Handmaid’s Tale, completing a circular narrative for her tale.

This conclusion had been in Miller’s thoughts for quite some time prior to the announcement of The Testaments. Yet, it also perfectly suits the subsequent series, production on which started the very day before the Season 6 premiere was set to air.

Will June be in The Testaments?

It appears that the upcoming Hulu series primarily features Aunt Lydia, Agnes (Hannah), and Daisy (Nichole/Holly). However, there’s a strong possibility that Elisabeth Moss will return to her role as well. Notably, she is also involved in the series as an executive producer.

During a chat with Variety, Miller shared some adjustments they are implementing for their adaptation, which deviates slightly from Margaret Atwood’s sequel novel of the same title, particularly in regard to the leap through time.

He mentioned that June and Nick, who passed away in Season 6 Episode 9, will definitely be alluded to in future plots, and their relevance will be made much clearer than it is in the original story, possibly even introduced earlier.

Since the book primarily delves into the lives of Agnes and Lydia, as well as various perspectives from their lives, it doesn’t connect the dots until the very end.

However, it seems that while we’re progressing with our narrative, their thoughts appear to be centered more on the broader context, but your characters seem to be focusing more on those individuals who brought about transformations at the conclusion of the previous series.

It seems to me that June is more prominent in the narrative. Yet, it’s important to note that Agnes isn’t aware in the story that this woman is her mother. However, since The Testaments and The Handmaid’s Tale are both told from a retrospective perspective, it’s clear that Agnes is fully informed about the entire tale by then.

A significant and impactful assemblage of mothers plays a crucial role in the narrative. It’s fascinating to ponder the women who have left their mark on her life, and it’s clear that she carries a good deal of ‘June’ within her, which suggests she’s bound to cause some turmoil.

Furthermore, Miller expressed to The Hollywood Reporter, “It’s great to have such expectations. I certainly hope she makes an appearance there as well. She continues to excel in her role, much like she did in The Handmaid’s Tale.

Luke and Moira continue their search, determinedly ringing the bell in hopes of finding Hannah. Watching The Handmaid’s Tale provides a unique insight, as it becomes clear that there exists a vast network of individuals, willing to take risks for the sake of reuniting with their children.

In “The Testaments,” the characters may not express the same feelings as those in “The Handmaid’s Tale.” However, having gone through the events of “The Handmaid’s Tale,” it’s clear that there’s a larger underlying operation at play. Undoubtedly, June is impacting “The Testaments.” She continues to be active and her primary goal remains reuniting with Hannah.

Can we spot her? I’m eager to meet her. I adore Lizzy Caplan, she’s fantastic! She plays a significant role off-camera as well.

Moss hinted that she might reappear in the series, but added, “To find out, you’ll need to tune in. I won’t be present on the set of ‘The Testaments’, as my role has changed to that of a producer.

As an enthusiast, I just can’t step back and let things unfold without my direct involvement. It’s simply not in my nature to approach tasks differently. Plus, with the influx of emails, it definitely feels like a hands-on role!

Time jump after The Handmaid’s Tale

In 2019, Atwood’s novel was published, set 15 years following the events depicted in “The Handmaid’s Tale”. As for the upcoming TV series, Miller mentioned that they’re planning a different approach, with a time skip of three to five years instead.

He explained to Variety that it’s unlikely, as the subject in question seems to encompass Hannah during her teenage years, around ages 14, 15, and 16.

Approximately three to five years have passed since The Handmaid’s Tale, give or take a year or so, considering the inherent uncertainty in this fictional setting. In other words, we’re looking at a timeframe that is roughly around three to four years post-The Handmaid’s Tale.

As a gamer, I’d say it sets this game apart that it doesn’t follow real-world aging rules. Since our story unfolds within a specific timeframe, characters don’t age as they would in reality. Instead, babies grow and mature at their own pace within the game world, making for an interesting twist on the usual progression of ages we see in real life.

As a devoted fan, I found myself in an unusual situation when Nichole decided against high school attendance, necessitating some adjustments. However, an intriguing conversation with Margaret proved to be a game-changer. She shared The Testaments concept with me, and our discussion about it started right from the beginning. It was clear that she subtly hinted at the project’s potential then.

Miller noted that Atwood wasn’t seeking his approval in any manner, but instead, she was offering him a valuable understanding of how he could develop the characters effectively to ensure they fit organically within “The Testaments”.

To maintain the prominence of Ann Dowd’s character Lydia in the Hulu series, they have decided to shorten the time jump for a different reason: they are bringing her back. If they had followed the book closely, her age would have been around 80, which might not have worked well given her significant role.

In the world of The Handmaid’s Tale, Daisy (formerly Nichole) and Agnes (originally Hannah) are two individuals. By the end of the original story, Daisy is twelve years old while Agnes is just two. Future developments in The Testaments, suggested by the age ranges of these characters as portrayed in the casting, indicate a significant time leap.

Confirmed The Testaments cast

Production on The Testaments, the television adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale, begins on April 7th. Ann Dowd will reappear as Aunt Lydia, and Elisabeth Moss will serve as an executive producer for the series. Keep updated by following @TestamentsHulu!

Lucy Halliday assumes the character of Daisy, while Chase Infiniti embodies Agnes in the production. In actuality, Lucy is 21 years old and Chase is 25.

According to the storyline of The Handmaid’s Tale, if we accept the three to five-year time leap, it implies Daisy is between five and seven years old, while Agnes falls within the ages of 15 to 17.

For Agnes, this approach might be suitable, but it’s not the case with Daisy. Since Miller mentioned “we needed adjustments”, I’m confident we’ll gain insights into how this situation is addressed in the upcoming months.

Additionally, the series creator expressed his openness to inviting more Handmaid’s Tale cast members back to the show, as suggested by Halliday, Infiniti, and Dowd.

As a fellow gamer with some spare time on my hands, I’d love to jump in if I can find a way to make it compatible. There are indeed practical matters to consider, but from a narrative standpoint, I believe many elements align perfectly with the universe of The Testaments.

Not only are these individuals remarkable, but they’re also my valued friends. They excel at their tasks, and I would be thrilled if they could rejoin our narrative whenever we manage to make that happen. They have a strong bond, making them highly connected.

Essentially, it’s different from some other series where events abruptly end without connection. Instead, the initial group of characters is significantly important to the subsequent ones in this case.

In essence, these narratives share strong connections and can be seen as an extension of “The Handmaid’s Tale,” with the focus shifting from the original protagonist to her daughter instead.

right now, you can stream Seasons 1-6 of The Handmaid’s Tale on Hulu. As you anticipate news about The Testaments, take the opportunity to get up-to-speed by reviewing our recaps for Season 6 Episodes 2 through 8. Additionally, keep an eye out for new TV shows scheduled for release in 2025!
