In the fourth season of “Abbott Elementary”, we finally saw Gregory and Janine as a happy pair, but I’m concerned that a subtly hinted-at plotline could cause issues in season 5, potentially altering the character of Gregory significantly. Throughout earlier seasons, the slow development of Janine and Gregory’s romance was met with numerous obstacles in the sitcom, mostly due to their feelings not aligning properly at the right moments, despite a growing mutual attraction. In season 3, even Ava stepped in to try to guide their relationship, encouraging Morton to announce his divorce as a nudge towards them. However, “Abbott Elementary” season 4 removed all doubts by opening with Gregory and Janine officially together as a couple.

The unique traits that defined the connection between Janine and Gregory during their initial encounters continued to be present as they began dating officially, although without the turbulence typical of earlier sitcom seasons. Creator Quinta Brunson intentionally crafted a healthy relationship dynamic between Gregory and Janine in the writers’ room by avoiding focusing on potential issues within their relationship. In the first season of “Abbott Elementary,” Gregory’s initial ambitions were swiftly set aside when he developed feelings for Janine and recognized the positive impact he was having on his students.
