Will Doctor Odyssey Sink or Swim?

ABC can’t count on us continuing under these circumstances. For the entire spring season, the network left viewers in suspense as it pondered the fate of the Ryan Murphy-produced medical drama set on a luxury cruise ship, “Doctor Odyssey.” The tension was agonizing. Even John Oliver joined the fray. Though network television has made a comeback, that doesn’t guarantee the safety of a series where someone overindulging in shrimp could be a main plot point. It didn’t attract enough viewers, and no number of blog posts could persuade ABC to renew the show about a sexually adventurous not-quite threesome who solve medical puzzles and spend their days lounging on a boat with Don Johnson. Perhaps “Doctor Odyssey” was too outrageous, too steamy, too maritime.

Last Friday, it was announced that the series “Doctor Odyssey” had been put on indefinite hold, or “default cancelled.” This means the cast and crew are free to pursue other projects without a formal announcement from ABC about the show’s future. However, as of June 30th, ABC claims the show is not officially canceled, but there has been no word from the cast regarding their plans. It seems like everyone is being coy about the matter, leaving fans in limbo and questioning whether they should start mourning the loss of the series for real. Essentially, “Doctor Odyssey” still technically exists, but without its crew, it’s like a ship adrift at sea with an uncertain future ahead. Fans will be left anxiously waiting to see what happens next.
