Among the highly anticipated movies on the summer lineup of 2025, one that I eagerly look forward to is the live-action remake of DreamWorks’ “How to Train Your Dragon”. Many people seem to feel the same way, as this film featuring Mason Thames and Nico Parker appears to have wonderfully preserved the essence of the 2010 original.
Absolutely, it’s always possible to concern oneself with future events. This is why director Dean DeBlois’ announcement that he’s drafting a potential sequel for the reimagined belief series has one person in particular on his wish list – someone who I strongly feel should be back for the new adaptation.
How To Train Your Dragon Director Dean DeBlois Is “Hopeful” Cate Blanchett Will Return
In an interview with Gizmodo, the director of Universal’s dragon story was questioned about the possibility of Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett returning to her role as Valka Haddock, who is believed to be deceased and is Hiccup’s mother and Stoick’s wife. With a live-action adaptation of “How to Train Your Dragon 2” already in the works for a June 2027 premiere, DeBlois’ comments about this matter become even more significant.
I’m hoping for the best, but since I’m still working on the script, it’s too soon to make any definite predictions about the outcome.
Given Gerard Butler’s reprisal as the head of Berk’s distinguished family, it was delightful news for the upcoming family fantasy production. Keeping that spirit in mind, I regret to say that the following point might appear a bit blunt. Regarding the live-action cast of How to Train Your Dragon, what Mr. DeBlois views as a “hope” is an absolute requirement for me. In other words…

Without Cate Blanchett As Valka Haddock, You Can Keep How To Train Your Dragon 2
Without attending CinemaCon’s early screening of “How to Train Your Dragon,” I acknowledge that my opinion might shift later. However, given that Gerard Butler has been brought back to portray Stoick the Vast, it’s difficult for me to imagine anyone else suited to play Hiccup’s mother in the sequel.
Given the plot development in the 2014 animated sequel, it’s quite understandable. However, if you haven’t watched the entire How to Train Your Dragon series yet, you might want to catch up on it using your Peacock subscription. That’s because I’ll need to discuss a key point from the second installment to fully explain why Ms. Blanchett is essential for the story.
As a movie connoisseur, let me share my emotional journey with you as I watched How to Train Your Dragon 2 unfold. In this cinematic masterpiece, we bear witness to Stoick the Vast’s selfless act – a sacrifice that ensures Hiccup and his long-lost mother’s safety, at the cost of his own life. The first time I experienced this heartrending scene, my jaw dropped, tears filled my eyes, and an ache settled deep within my heart as I sat in the theater seat.
To truly make that instant feel authentic, it’s essential for the bond between Stoick and Valka to be exceptionally vivid. This was indeed accomplished during the initial release, as evidenced by this heartwarming scene from the movie:
To fully sell that moment, the connection between Stoick and Valka needs to be deeply felt. This was undeniably achieved in the original presentation, as you can witness in this moving cinematic encounter:
Re-watching that particular instance brings a mix of sweetness and sadness due to juxtaposing the feelings with the looming tragedy. Just as How to Train Your Dragon’s live-action teaser chose Toothless and Hiccup’s initial meeting to convince viewers it was worth watching, this scene alone is enough to secure my interest for the sequel. Of course, I would be delighted if Cate Blanchett reappears in the next installment.
At the moment, let’s hold off on our excitement until we see the ticket sales for “How to Train Your Dragon” in cinemas. The movie premieres on June 13th, so we’re not that far away now, and you can even purchase your tickets ahead of time. Truthfully, it seems like something Toothless would encourage us to do.
