Will ‘Alien: Romulus’ Continue Disney’s Summer Box Office Streak?

As a seasoned film enthusiast who’s weathered the ups and downs of Hollywood for decades, I must say that the upcoming weekend promises to be a thrilling one! The highly anticipated “Alien: Romulus” is set to dominate the box office with its jaw-dropping projections ranging from $28 million to an astounding $50 million.

The sci-fi sequel “Alien: Romulus,” produced by Disney and 20th Century, is projected to make a strong debut at the box office, earning between $28 million and $38 million in its opening weekend. However, some rivals and tracking services predict that the film’s initial ticket sales could exceed these estimates, potentially reaching as high as $40 million or even $50 million.

If “Alien: Romulus” maintains its promising trajectory, it could extend Disney’s impressive summer box office success. This streak began with “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” in May (the highest-grossing movie of the year with $397 million), followed by “Inside Out 2” in June (earning $1.59 billion) and “Deadpool & Wolverine” in July ($1.03 billion). By August, Disney had already surpassed $3 billion in global ticket sales, making them the first studio to do so in 2024. Upcoming releases for Disney include “Moana 2” on November 27 and “Mufasa: The Lion King” on December 20.

As a film enthusiast who has been following the industry closely for years, I must admit that the latest turn of events surrounding the release of “Alien: Romulus” has piqued my interest. With Kevin Costner’s “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2” being pulled from the calendar due to disappointing returns of its predecessor, it seems like the fate of these ambitious projects is becoming increasingly uncertain.

As a passionate movie-goer, I’m eagerly anticipating the box office results for this weekend. While “Alien: Romulus” seems destined to rule supreme, it looks like a tight battle between “Deadpool & Wolverine” and “It Ends With Us” for the runner-up spot domestically. The dynamic duo of Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman in “Deadpool & Wolverine” is aiming to rack up another $25 million to $27 million in its fourth week on the big screen. This Marvel superhero adventure has already crossed the $1 billion mark worldwide, soon expected to surpass 2019’s “Joker” ($1.07 billion) as the highest-grossing R-rated film ever made. On the other hand, “It Ends With Us,” the captivating adaptation of a beloved novel starring Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni (who also directed), is on track for another strong weekend after its impressive $50 million debut. Predictions suggest it will earn between $23 million to $28 million in its second outing.

Disney initially planned a Hulu release titled “Alien: Romulus,” starring Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, and Isabela Merced, but later opted for a theatrical debut before filming began. This expensive, otherworldly journey was budgeted at $80 million, taking into account promotional expenses. It’s been seven years since the last installment, “Alien: Covenant” (2017), graced the silver screen. In that movie, Michael Fassbender starred, earning an opening of $36 million and a domestic total of $74 million, along with a global gross of $240 million. The highest-grossing chapter in the series is still “Prometheus” (2012), which made $51 million domestically and $403 million worldwide upon release.

Fede Alvarez (“Don’t Breathe”) is the director of “Alien: Romulus,” the seventh film in the science fiction horror series that started with Ridley Scott’s “Alien” in 1979. This new movie takes place between the events depicted in the original and its sequel, “Aliens,” from 1986. The story revolves around a band of young space colonists who encounter a frightening creature while exploring an abandoned space station.
