Three people from Southern California have been sentenced to jail for trying to commit insurance fraud by falsely claiming they were attacked by a bear.
This unusual case began in November 2024 with the arrest of four people accused of insurance fraud. They claimed a bear had damaged their expensive cars and even submitted security video as proof, showing a supposed bear breaking into a Rolls-Royce at Lake Arrowhead.
It quickly turned out the footage wasn’t of a bear at all, but a person in a bear costume damaging the car’s interior.
Operation Bear Claw ends in jail time
The California Department of Insurance investigated the incident, calling it “Operation Bear Claw,” and shared the video with wildlife biologists. The experts quickly determined the footage showed a person in a bear suit, not an actual bear.

Alfiya Zuckerman, Ruben Tamrazian, and Vahe Muradkhanyan have each been sentenced to 180 days in jail and must pay back the money they obtained through their complex scheme. Another suspect, Ararat Chirkinian, is still awaiting trial.
I just read about this crazy situation – a guy in California was so frustrated with a bear living under his house that he actually threatened to sue! It’s wild to think about, and I had to share it with you if you’re also following bear-related news.
