As a die-hard musical theater fan who has been waiting for this moment since I first saw “Wicked” on Broadway back in 2008, I can confidently say that I am beyond excited for Jon M. Chu’s adaptation of this beloved tale! The anticipation is palpable, and the hype surrounding “Wicked” Part 1 feels like a magical electric current coursing through the air.

2024’s anticipated blockbuster, Wicked Part 1, is poised for great popularity and success, and if you’re eagerly counting down the days to stream it, be sure to monitor this specific platform closely.

On the following day, Jon M. Chu’s much-anticipated movie adaptation will be shown across the country, at last bringing the tale of Glinda the Good (portrayed by Ariana Grande) and Elphaba (played by Cynthia Erivo, who becomes the Wicked Witch of the West in the future), to life on the big screen.

The movie is expected to earn a massive amount at the box office: with impressive presales in the U.S., substantial bookings in foreign markets, and screenings being sold out globally, it might rake in approximately $200 million worldwide during its debut weekend. This potential earnings could be almost equal to that of Deadpool & Wolverine, a film which already ranks among the highest-grossing movies ever made.

Essentially, it seems everyone is eagerly anticipating the release of the new film. Be it your plan to catch it from the comfort of your home later, or your eagerness to find out when it will be available for rewatching on streaming platforms, here are some points you might find useful.

How to watch Wicked

Wicked will be available exclusively in cinemas nationwide from Friday, November 22.

If you haven’t secured tickets for its opening weekend yet… I wish you the best of luck! Despite sharing the spotlight with Gladiator 2, Wicked is generating a lot of buzz; it’s highly recommended as a family film not to be missed. Plus, it’s adapted from the second-most successful Broadway musical ever produced (just behind The Lion King).

rest assured, any tickets you secure will prove rewarding in the end. Our review of Wicked declares it as “potentially the standout film experience of this year,” making a visit to your nearest cinema highly recommended.

Where to stream Wicked

Since “Wicked” is a Universal Pictures film, it’s expected to debut for streaming first on Peacock, ahead of any other platforms.

Since 2022, NBCUniversal has held exclusive rights to their studio’s films, which were only available on Peacock. But starting from 2023, these rights for one-time viewing (Pay-One) have been shared between Peacock and Amazon Prime Video.

Here’s a more straightforward way of explaining the deal: Movies on Peacock will be available for four months, then move to Prime Video for ten months. After that, they’ll return to Peacock again for another four months. Once the 18-month window is over, these films can be sold to other platforms like Netflix.

Wicked streaming date depends on its box office performance

The timing for streaming Wicked largely hinges on its success at the movie theaters. If it continues to make a substantial amount of money each week (hundreds of millions), then you might not see it streamed anytime in the near future.

At the latest, it wouldn’t appear on Peacock until 45 days following its theatrical premiere, which means it would debut on January 6, 2025.

That date isn’t one to pencil into your planner just yet. As previously mentioned, it’s predicted to be a blockbuster hit, potentially ruling over movie theaters during the holiday season, outmuscling movies like Sonic 3, Mufasa, and Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim (audiences have been asked to refrain from singing during screenings).

In 2024, Universal Pictures released Despicable Me 4, one of the year’s biggest blockbusters, earning a staggering $968 million globally. It premiered in theaters on July 3, and didn’t become available on Peacock until October 31 – a gap of 120 days, marking the commencement of the Pay-One Window period.

Essentially, what this means is that the streaming release of Wicked is likely not until March 2025. But, there’s a chance you could purchase or rent it digitally before then, so stay tuned for more information.

Prior to watching Wicked at theaters, ensure you’re well-prepared by emptying your bladder in advance (due to Wicked’s running time), determining whether Wicked is appropriate for children, and gathering additional information on what lies ahead in Wicked Sequel.
