Starting March 21, the highly acclaimed and financially successful movie musical “Wicked” – which garnered 10 Academy Award nominations and grossed $727 million globally – will be available for streaming on Peacock. On the same day, viewers can also enjoy the sing-along version of the film as well as additional bonus content. Directed by Jon M. Chu, known for films like “Crazy Rich Asians” and “In the Heights”, this musical is a prequel to the classic tale “The Wizard of Oz”, based on the much-loved Broadway production.
In this enchanting tale, I find myself captivated by the stellar performances of Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda. Their Oscar-nominated portrayals beautifully depict an unforeseen bond that blossoms between these two characters. However, their friendship is put to the test when they cross paths with the revered Wonderful Wizard of Oz, played by none other than Jeff Goldblum. Joining them in this exploration of female camaraderie, power struggles, and the hidden magic within us are Michelle Yeoh, Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, and Peter Dinklage. This cinematic journey offers a fresh take on friendship, corruption, and the extraordinary power residing in each of us.
In the upcoming “Wicked” movie, you’ll find some beloved tunes from the stage musical such as “Popular”, “Defying Gravity”, “Dancing Through Life”, and “The Wizard and I”. The first part of this two-part adaptation is what we will see on the big screen. The second film, called “Wicked: For Good”, is set to premiere in cinemas on November 21st.
In his favorable review for the movie “EbMaster”, critic Peter Debruge commented that the film “Wicked” has discovered its perfect shape, where each scene is filled with intricate details that could potentially be overwhelming if not skillfully handled by an actor of lesser caliber than Cynthia Erivo.
Apart from the acting nominations for Erivo and Grande, “Wicked” additionally secured Oscar nominations in several categories, including Best Picture, Best Production Design, and Best Costume Design.
