Cynthia Erivo, the star of ‘Wicked,’ is very close to achieving EGOT status – winning an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Award. Many believe she could be the 22nd person to accomplish this prestigious feat, and 2026 was seen as a likely year for her to do so. Erivo has captivated audiences with her role as Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, and is widely expected to be nominated for the Best Lead Actress Oscar in 2026.
While many doubt Cynthia Erivo will win the Best Actress Oscar, facing strong competition from Jessie Buckley (for Hamnet) and Renate Reinsve (Sentimental Value), she was considered a strong contender for Best Original Song. Reports indicated she co-wrote a new song for Wicked 2 with Stephen Schwartz, boosting her chances in that category.
The film adaptation of the Broadway hit Wicked: For Good includes two new songs: “No Place Like Home,” performed by Elphaba, and “The Girl in the Bubble,” sung by Glinda (Ariana Grande). While submitting the movie for 16 Oscar nominations, Universal Pictures is only crediting Stephen Schwartz as the songwriter for both of these new songs.
Currently, only Paul Schwartz would be considered for an Oscar nomination or win for either “No Place Like Home” or “The Girl in the Bubble” in the Best Original Song category. It was previously believed that Cynthia Erivo’s work on the song would qualify her as a co-nominee. However, if she is eligible, it’s unknown whether that decision came from her and her team or from Universal Pictures.
Cynthia Erivo’s hopes of winning an Oscar – and completing her EGOT – next year rest entirely on the Best Lead Actress category, which is a tough competition. While many haven’t yet seen Wicked: For Good, she could become a strong contender once more people discuss her performance. However, currently, Buckley appears to be the frontrunner, especially with her film potentially being nominated for Best Picture.
The Best Original Song category is especially competitive this year, meaning Cynthia Erivo wasn’t a shoo-in to win. However, the possibility of her achieving EGOT status – winning an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony – may have swayed voters towards her song, “No Place Like Home,” over “Golden” from KPop Demon Hunters. Without considering the EGOT factor, the race between the two songs remains very close.
Cynthia Erivo has received numerous awards for her work in The Color Purple, including a Daytime Emmy and a Grammy shared with the cast, as well as a Tony Award for her leading role in the revival. She’s also earned two Oscar nominations for Best Lead Actress for her performances in Wicked and Harriet, and a nomination for Best Original Song for “Stand Up” from Harriet.
A lot of people, including many Academy members, were hoping Cynthia Erivo would achieve EGOT status this year, so this news is understandably disappointing. However, Erivo has several promising projects on the horizon. After her work in Wicked: For Good, she’s poised to become a hugely popular and respected star, and it’s likely she’ll eventually land a role that earns her that coveted award.
