The game “Marathon” was met with a blend of positive and negative responses following its initial unveiling, with some comparing it to “Concord 2.0.” Now, a developer who previously worked on the defunct Firewalk project has expressed his backing for Bungie’s upcoming extraction shooter.
In the unveiling of Marathon, developed by the makers behind Halo and Destiny, anticipation ran high on April 12. Yet, the reaction was somewhat split, with some lauding its futuristic aesthetic, while others expressed concern that the game’s fast-paced action might not capture a wide player base.
To add to everything else, there was additionally apprehension regarding the game not offering a free-to-play model and lacking important elements such as proximity communication.
Due to certain issues, many fans criticized Marathon as a flop at launch and even drew parallels with Concord, which closed after only 10 days due to insufficient player participation. However, a developer involved in Sony’s discontinued hero shooter defended Bungie’s work on Marathon.
Former Firewalk dev defends Marathon after “Concord 2.0” comparisons
After the unveiling of the gameplay, Stephen Williams – a former contributor to Concord – took to Reddit to discuss some insights into his involvement with a project that unfortunately didn’t succeed.
He made it clear that a large number of gamers are familiar with the Concord project and its outcome. Unfortunately, the project didn’t captivate players, and this lack of appeal became apparent. He also shared his disappointment in seeing our project flop and become a source of amusement for many online.
Those who risk their time with the hope of entertaining a vast global gaming audience may not feel any worse than anyone else, but their dedication and potential disappointment can be particularly profound.
He continued by expressing admiration towards Bungie, noting they ventured beyond their usual territory, and expressed his belief that the evident enthusiasm they put into the project would instill confidence among players about its potential success.
He praised them for having the boldness to step out of their comfort zone, tackling something new and unproven, without a guarantee of success. It takes great bravery, he added. ‘We didn’t make it this time, but let’s not blame others for our errors. We are all just people striving to create something extraordinary, and Marathon is no exception. Let’s be understanding and laid-back, as video games are here to entertain us.’
In the comments section, the developer subsequently engaged with commenters, expressing his shock at the number of gamers who prematurely declared Marathon as being defunct.
As a passionate admirer, I wouldn’t dream of being the center of attention, yet I can’t help but express my bewilderment. It seems almost unbelievable to me that someone would declare this game a flop before it’s even been released.
Final decision on Marathon won’t be made until it reaches players on September 23. However, for those eager to get a sneak peek, the Closed Alpha Test is available on April 23.
