This summer, the eagerly awaited reboot of the classic Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 and 4 will be available. It features refreshed levels, novel skate parks, and both fresh and familiar skaters. Interestingly, developer Iron Galaxy has decided to adjust THPS 4’s original campaign layout to align it with THPS 3, which has sparked debates among fans. However, the team at Iron Galaxy clarified that their aim is to create remakes as harmonious as possible by making them compatible with each other.
In a sneak peek at its remakes, Iron Galaxy stated they aim to create a unified and seamless collection. Since they’re offering THPS 3 and 4 together as a set, they are striving to produce something as harmonious as the critically acclaimed Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2, developed by Vicarious Visions in 2020. Design manager Mike Rossi elaborated, “Our objective is to construct the ultimate combo of 3 and 4. Consequently, we felt that aligning it more with the feel of THPS 3, rather than the original style of THPS 4, was a more suitable approach for a consistent package we’re producing.
To highlight, the reboots will primarily focus on the time-bound style prevalent in the initial Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater games (1-3). However, both THPS 3 and its remake offer an opportunity for free roam exploration within the maps. As TopMob shared earlier this year, unlike the original structure of THPS 4 where you could complete challenges at your convenience, it will now feature Free Skate, Speed Run, and Single Session modes. The new version maintains the need to complete challenges within set time limits, as seen in the first three games. Interestingly, Iron Galaxy seems to be providing an option for players to adjust this timer in THPS 4, allowing them to finish tasks at their own pace, as reported by VGC.
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 and 4 will be available to play starting July 15 across multiple platforms, including PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch (version 2 & original), and PC. Not only will you find iconic skaters like Tony Hawk and Bob Burnquist alongside classic skateparks such as Alcatraz and Airport, but the remakes also include fresh content like a playable Doomslayer character and a brand-new Waterpark map. If things go as planned for Tony Hawk, we might not have seen the last of his franchise’s remakes. The skateboarding icon has hinted at a potential return to Tony Hawk’s Underground, but only if Microsoft (the current owner of the franchise) agrees. His interest in this project could hinge on the commercial success of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 and 4.
