Why The Last Of Us Season 2 Is Making This Major Change To Abby’s Story

As a gamer diving into The Last of Us Part II, I found myself immersed in the tale through Kaitlyn Dever’s captivating portrayal of Abby. It’s common knowledge that adaptations need to tweak elements to fit their respective mediums, and this season is no exception when it comes to shaping Abby’s narrative.

In this game, players first encounter Abby through a cinematic scene (as reported by GamesRadar), which then shifts to letting the players control Abby as their playable character for some time. This direct interaction with Abby creates a strong, immediate emotional bond between players and Abby, according to writer Neil Druckmann during an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

It’s clear that the TV series doesn’t allow interaction, so Druckmann and his team innovated by altering aspects such as the timeline. To remind fans, they don’t uncover Abby’s past until a significant event unfolds, following which the game goes back to depict how events transpired from Abby’s viewpoint.

The TV show shifts the timeline so viewers get this context earlier on.

He explained that in order to create intrigue and keep some elements hidden until later in the story, they couldn’t do that within the show because the audience isn’t playing as the character. Instead, they needed alternative methods. He pointed out that if they followed a similar timeline closely, viewers would have to wait an extremely long time for crucial context. This delay could potentially spoil the plot between seasons, which was something they wanted to avoid. Thus, it seemed fitting under those circumstances to advance that context and provide it immediately from the beginning.

Showrunner Craig Mazin previously teased a major timeline change for Season 2.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Mazin stated, “We’ve made some creative adjustments to time, as per the original source, that felt fitting for our show. By ‘made changes’, I mean we strategically manipulated time in a storytelling sense to create the most dramatic effect.

I can hardly contain my excitement! On April 13th, I’ll be diving back into the post-apocalyptic world of “The Last of Us” for its second season. Pedro Pascal returns as Joel, and Bella Ramsey reprises her role as Ellie. This time around, we have Kaitlyn Dever joining the cast as Abby, with Young Mazino stepping into the shoes of Jesse, Isabela Merced portraying Dina, and Catherine O’Hara bringing Gail, Joel’s therapist, to life. The Matrix’s Joe Pantoliano takes on the role of Eugene, a character hinted at in the game but never before seen. Can’t wait to see where this journey takes us!
