Why The Last Of Us Season 2 Didn’t Include This One Heartbreaking Death From The Game

In Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us game and its HBO adaptation, many characters meet their end. However, viewers who had played The Last of Us Part II or were familiar with its story might have anticipated even more violence in the Season 2 finale. Now, the showrunners have explained why a particular death was omitted from the final episode.

Major spoilers follow below.

In “The Last of Us Part II” video game, the character Ellie encounters and ultimately kills a dog named Alice during her pursuit of Abby. This dog, Alice, plays a significant role in the storyline and shares some heartwarming moments with the audience. On the other hand, in the TV adaptation, Ellie does not kill the dog. However, the reasoning behind this difference isn’t explicitly stated.

Showrunner Craig Mazin has experience in television productions involving canine casualties, as evidenced by an episode of the acclaimed Chernobyl series on HBO that Mazin penned, where soldiers were tasked with euthanizing dogs to hinder the spread of nuclear contamination. Mazin himself expressed that such dog-related tragedies are beyond his creative scope.

Mazin stated at a gathering with Polygon that it seems like a person only gets one instance of a dog being harmed throughout their entire life. In Hollywood, there are two main guidelines: First, never invest your own funds; Second, refrain from harming a dog.

In his words, Mazin expressed concerns over the intense depiction of violence in a real-life series such as “The Last of Us”, especially regarding the potential inclusion of a scene involving the killing of a dog.

As a dedicated fan, I’d like to share that Neil Druckmann hinted at the Season 2 finale potentially being overloaded with deaths, mentioning that sparing Alice the dog could be one such instance. In the episode, Ellie ends up killing Owen, and unintentionally wounds Mel in the neck, leading to her demise. Mel, who was expecting, pleads with Ellie to perform a cesarean section on her, but Ellie chooses not to.

In the gripping finale of Season 2, just like in one of those intense gaming sessions, I find myself meeting an unexpected end, leaving viewers questioning Tommy’s fate. For those unfamiliar with the game lore, there’s a lingering doubt if Ellie survived the season’s dramatic ending too. The show ends on a suspenseful note, reminiscent of the Sopranos, as Abby fires a gun and Ellie lets out a chilling scream, leaving the screen black.

In the upcoming Season 3, we’ll delve deeply into Abby’s narrative, offering viewers an insight into the three critical days preceding her actions against Jesse and Ellie. It’s probable that a fourth season will unfold later on, though as of now, HBO has not specified a release date for Season 3 nor confirmed the show’s renewal for a fourth installment.

Regarding the game series, Naughty Dog hasn’t officially confirmed The Last of Us 3 yet, although there are plenty of hints suggesting otherwise. However, what has been verified is that Naughty Dog is working on a new intellectual property titled Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, as well as at least one other game. Earlier, they were developing a multiplayer version of The Last of Us, but it was eventually scrapped.
