Why Switch 2 Is More Expensive, According To Nintendo

The cost of Switch 2 has been revealed, and the $450 price mark came as a surprise to some. It might even increase further because of the contentious tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump in the U.S. Now, Nintendo representatives Bill Trinen and Doug Bowser have clarified and justified the pricing decision.

According to Trinen, he expressed to IGN that it’s only natural for prices to increase over time, but ideally, they wouldn’t. He mentioned that the upcoming Switch 2 will come with fresh features and advanced technology, which inevitably comes at a cost, as stated by him.

He mentioned, “What is it like using the Nintendo Switch? How about the Nintendo Switch 2? What additional features does it have? And of course, there are costs associated with these factors, but our aim is to determine a fair and reasonable price for the product based on those considerations.

Meanwhile, Bowser informed The Verge that Trump’s April tariff declarations were not incorporated into the actual pricing of the Switch 2. Just two days following the unveiling of the Switch 2’s price, Nintendo postponed pre-orders in the US to evaluate the possible effects of tariffs and changing market conditions.

There’s talk that the possible increase in the cost of Nintendo Switch 2 might be due to tariffs, but it’s yet to be confirmed. It’s still scheduled to launch on June 5th as planned.

In a subsequent statement, Bowser elaborated that factors such as the larger screen, enhanced specifications, innovative features like GameChat, and additional attributes were key considerations when determining its price.

Analyst Serkan Toto suggests that while tariffs could potentially contribute to the price hike, a more straightforward explanation for the increased cost is Nintendo’s confidence in its market power. In his words, “Nintendo is able to charge this price because they believe their consumers will pay it.” However, Toto made this statement before Nintendo postponed Switch 2 preorders, citing tariffs as the reason.

Two games, including the launch title “Mario Kart World,” are priced higher, setting you back around $80 USD. Nintendo plans to showcase the worth and allure of this game during their upcoming Nintendo Direct event on April 17th.
