As a Taylor Swift fan myself, I readily admit I’m constantly trying to link her current work back to Reputation and a potential re-recording of it. Now, with the release of The Life of a Showgirl, fellow Swifties (including me!) are doing exactly that. Yes, theories are circulating suggesting that the previously unreleased tracks from Rep might be included with this new album, and we need to discuss them.
Notably, after regaining ownership of her music, Taylor Swift released a statement detailing the situation and her plans to re-record her first album and Reputation. She explained that she hadn’t finished even a quarter of the sixth album and discussed the difficulties of revisiting it, stating that it was the only album of her first six that she didn’t believe could be improved with a re-recording. This essentially meant fans shouldn’t expect a complete Reputation (Taylor’s Version) release.
However, she did mention that the unreleased songs (often called “vault tracks”) would eventually be revealed, and it’s the word “hatch” that’s causing some confusion among fans. This is because the promotional material for The Life of a Showgirl has featured images of things hatching on the cover.
Additionally, the striking visual you used strongly resembles the graphics featured during the Rep song “Delicate” on the Eras Tour. You can compare it yourself by viewing the concert film with a Disney+ subscription.
This didn’t end there, though. On Apple Music, some random lyrics in Reputation were unexpectedly capitalized. This actually led to the discovery of a new lyric from Taylor Swift’s next album: “They don’t make loyalty like they used to,” according to @TSUpdating. Interestingly, the same thing occurred with the lyrics on 1989 the very next day.
Despite everything, the speculation keeps going. As USA Today reported, during a recent Spotify event in New York – the same one where Travis Kelce mentioned “Keep it 100” – fans noticed something that reminded them of Taylor Swift’s Rep era. The report mentioned a packed bag used as a prop, which had a gold key attached to its strap. Many Swifties believe this is a reference to “Getaway Car,” a popular song from Reputation, because the song includes the lyrics “Put the money in the bag and I stole the key.”
It’s also interesting to note the similarities between Reputation and The Life of a Showgirl. Both album covers were photographed by the same team, Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott. Furthermore, Taylor Swift’s twelfth album is being produced by herself, Max Martin, and Shellback – the same trio who worked with her on Red, 1989 and Rep. That sixth album marked the last time this group collaborated.
I’m definitely noticing things that are making me joke about Reputation and those unreleased songs from the vault, because a lot of clues are starting to connect. But, it’s possible we’re overthinking things, just like with the gold bodysuit, and reading too much into this. Especially since Taylor Swift mentioned The Life of a Showgirl would only have 12 songs.
The surprises will keep coming, because we won’t have a clear picture of what’s happening until the album is released at midnight. So, prepare yourselves, everyone, because regardless of whether the Rep vault is opened or not, we’re about to begin a new and incredibly exciting chapter.
