Sasheer Zamata bid adieu to her character Jennifer Kale from “Agatha All Along” by literally soaring off towards the sunset during her final day of filming for the Disney+ and Marvel series. To achieve this, she dug herself out of a hole in the ground, then with the assistance of a harness and a crane, she was lifted up to symbolize a new beginning.
As the final scene I captured for the series, it was truly an emotional rollercoaster – filled with so much raw emotion and tears. The sight of the real sky that day was breathtakingly beautiful, but what made it even more remarkable was having the chance to perform such a daring stunt. Yet, there was something deeply symbolic about it too – it felt like I was bidding farewell to this incredible journey we’ve all shared together, watching as it faded into the distance.
As a movie enthusiast, I can’t help but feel the tears welling up as I reflect on WandaVision. Throughout the series, we watched Wanda transform from a powerless witch peddling questionable candles, to a free sorceress, breaking free from the chains that once held her back. This metamorphosis occurred when she hesitantly walked with Agatha (Kathryn Hahn) along the enigmatic Witches’ Path, a mystical test of endurance rumored to grant those who complete it their deepest desires. However, we later discovered that this path was merely a magical deception concocted by Billy Maximoff (Joe Locke). Despite this revelation, Wanda was the lone traveler to reach the end and she received what she yearned for: the powers that were taken from her a century ago, yes, by Agatha herself.
Jen’s emotional odyssey isn’t without its share of wit. After enduring a hundred years of powerless solitude, expelled from her coven, she developed a bitingly sarcastic mistrust for others and an appraising squint that could make anyone feel small. However, in the end, she transforms into a caring, tenacious leader of the coven she eventually grows to cherish.
Or:
Jen’s emotional adventure doesn’t shy away from humor. Spending a century in powerless seclusion, rejected by her coven, gave her a quick-witted skepticism towards others and an intense stare that could bring you low. Yet, she eventually evolves into a sympathetic, determined leader of the coven she grows fond of.
Zamata’s professional journey has largely been shaped by comedic performances, starting with stand-up, moving on to a three-season tenure on “Saturday Night Live,” and later appearing in shows such as “Home Economics” and “Woke.” However, the role in “Agatha All Along” signifies a significant shift for the actress. This project provided her an opportunity to delve into the intricate blend of comedy and drama alongside acting heavyweights like Hahn, Patti LuPone, and Aubrey Plaza, exploring forces of nature on screen.
She admits, “I’ve never attempted stunts like these before, and flying in such a manner is entirely new to me. What’s more, I’ve rarely cried as much during a project as I did this time, which is quite intriguing. The reason it’s fascinating is not just the tears. It’s about accessing a depth that I believe the audience can also relate to, and that’s what drives me. That’s why I perform – to forge a connection with the audience. Initially, I started performing live and experiencing the energy from the crowd; it fuels me as well.
Typically, Marvel concludes its series without providing a postscript about the characters’ subsequent actions when they acquire new abilities, such as Jen’s flight at the end of the show. However, Zamata offers intriguing theories on what could have happened next with her powers.
Jen’s longing to reconnect with her original self is palpable throughout this, and it’s something you can’t help but sense,” she notes. “For a hundred years, she’s been devoid of her magic, disconnected from her identity. That’s a heavy burden, and I believe many people are rooting for her success.
It was also a win for Zamata, who underwent a transformation of her own with Jen’s guidance.
She mentions that playing Jen has made her feel closer to nature. It’s as if she’s spending more time with the earth itself, finding joy in handling soil, and seeking a sense of balance. She’s been picking flowers too. One of Jen’s special abilities is weaving magic from her surroundings, and she feels that she’s now more aware of the natural magic all around us and trying to incorporate it into her daily life.
