2025’s Star Wars Celebration started off with a surprise blast as Shawn Levy’s upcoming Star Wars film titled “Star Wars: Starfighter,” featuring Ryan Gosling, was unveiled – but what implications might this have for Rey’s Star Wars movie? Previous speculations had been swirling about Ryan Gosling and Star Wars, and in the run-up to the celebration, those whispers particularly focused on Levy’s project. Among all the reveals at Star Wars Celebration 2025 so far, this one stood out as particularly unexpected.
It became even more surprising when it was revealed that the upcoming Star Wars film, “Starfighter,” is scheduled for release after “The Mandalorian” and Grogu, specifically on May 28, 2027. This revelation has sparked significant curiosity about the rumored Star Wars movie featuring Rey, supposedly titled “Star Wars: New Jedi Order.” Although the film’s delay or cancellation is not yet confirmed, the announcement of “Starfighter” does lead to a valid question: why will we see Ryan Gosling’s movie before “New Jedi Order,” given that the latter was announced much earlier?
Daisy Ridley’s Star Wars Movie Was Announced Two Years Ago
New Jedi Order Was Among The Star Wars Celebration 2023 Announcements
At Star Wars Celebration 2023, Lucasfilm revealed that Daisy Ridley, who portrayed Rey in the sequel series, will reprise her role for a fresh Star Wars film. While specifics were scarce, as is common with Star Wars updates, it was also made known that the New Jedi Order would unfold 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker in the Star Wars chronology. This revelation strongly suggests that the Star Wars universe is indeed preparing to depart from the Skywalker Saga’s narrative.
Over the past two years, there have been frequent inquiries about the advancements in “Star Wars” during interviews, as fans were eager for news regarding the plot, characters, and release schedule. However, it appears that “Star Wars” has barely moved forward with Rey’s film, a fact noticeable even before Star Wars Celebration. This became evident due to several reasons: firstly, the writing duties for “New Jedi Order” have been passed from Steven Knight to George Nolfi; secondly, Ridley herself admitted that she hasn’t had a chance to read the script yet.
The New Jedi Order project seems to be moving slowly or not at all, as it barely got any attention during the panels, announcements, and discussions at Star Wars Celebration 2025. In contrast, Rey’s movie was briefly mentioned but didn’t take center stage, which is a significant shift from Star Wars Celebration 2023 where Daisy Ridley was a prominent guest. This suggests that the creators of Star Wars may not be prioritizing Rey’s movie as much as they did in the past—leaving us wondering why.
The Stakes Are Higher With Rey
Realistically, Star Wars Has A Lot More Riding On New Jedi Order
Regardless of the merit or lack thereof, and regardless of whether it’s justified or not, the weighty expectations that naturally attach to Rey’s Star Wars film could influence the timing of future Star Wars movie releases. The sequel trilogy has been one of the most contentious additions to the Star Wars franchise in its almost 50-year run, with many viewing those films as among the worst in the series. It’s unfortunate, but any new Star Wars project, including New Jedi Order, is bound to face some level of criticism.
It’s not pessimistic or rational for fans to dismiss a new Rey movie without knowing the plot, but it’s hard not to think that Lucasfilm, while deciding the release order of their upcoming films, might be considering the significant impact and importance of Rey to the franchise’s future. On the other hand, it has been suggested that Lucasfilm views Rey as a crucial asset for the franchise. If this is accurate, then the attention being given to Rey can be seen as both a potential problem and an opportunity.
In both scenarios, it’s fair to say that the pressure or expectation for Ryan Gosling’s Star Wars film is significantly less compared to other Star Wars productions such as New Jedi Order. This is due to the fact that his movie has been confirmed as a standalone film, meaning its success will not be tied to that of Starfighter in sustaining the franchise. While Star Wars certainly hopes for the film’s success, it doesn’t carry the same weighty expectations as New Jedi Order does. Moreover, this movie could potentially shape the future of Star Wars by introducing a new Jedi Order on screen – the first since the prequels, which in itself is a significant development in the Star Wars saga, regardless of Rey’s character’s role.
It’s Surely Only A Matter Of Time Before The New Jedi Order Is Unveiled
A New Jedi Order Feels Inevitable Either Way
As a devoted fan, I wholeheartedly believe that the Star Wars universe will eventually reintroduce a new Jedi Order, either in a movie centered around Rey directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy or another project altogether. While Star Wars has been expanding its horizons by exploring characters outside of the Jedi and Sith, the Jedi remain an integral part of this epic saga. Given that it’s been quite some time since we last saw a fully functioning Jedi Order (both within the universe and in real life), I eagerly anticipate this long-awaited return.
From my perspective, I’m confidently expecting that Rey’s journey will continue to unfold in her movie, and I wholeheartedly support Star Wars taking the time needed to craft a compelling narrative. It’s been whispered that the delay in the release of the New Jedi Order could be due to the abundance of intriguing paths for Rey’s storyline. Though it came as quite a surprise when Star Wars Celebration 2025 announced that Starfighter would follow The Mandalorian and Grogu, it seems logical that Star Wars is strategically scheduling its new movies in this manner.
