Why Rotta the Hutt Looks Nothing Like Jabba According to The Mandalorian’s Jon Favreau

As a devoted fan, I can share that director Jon Favreau has shed light on why Jeremy Allen White’s character, Rotta the Hutt, differs from the renowned Jabba in the Star Wars universe. Rotta, who made his debut as a youngling back in 2008’s Star Wars: The Clone Wars, is none other than the offspring of the notorious interstellar crime lord.

During an interview, Favreau talked about the development of the Hutts within the broader Star Wars universe and their transformation into Rotta’s more robust appearance. “I believe it was essential for us to have a distinct image since everyone…We certainly draw inspiration from the Extended Universe, and the Hutts are simply an intriguing group,” he started off. “They were delved into somewhat through Jabba and what we remembered from our childhood. However, with Filoni and animation, they truly expanded upon it. And of course, there were additional resources like comics, such as Grakkus – that was his name, right? Grakkus – he was one of the Hutts who stood out for being particularly powerful. So, there are various types, even in animation.

The creator of “The Mandalorian” discussed the advantage of advanced technology in bringing his characters to life. He said, “There are many visual concepts that have been explored before. Now with modern technology, it’s exciting to see what we can create with species that were once impossible to depict.” Favreau added, “Consider the difficulty in the original trilogy with the number of puppeteers required and props built. Then there was the exploration with CGI in the special editions, followed by our work on ‘Book of Boba Fett’ with the twins. So, it’s a lot of fun! Not to mention, for the big screen, nothing is bigger than a Hutt.
