Why Patrick Dempsey Isn’t Returning for ‘Scream 7’

Patrick Dempsey wanted to return for “Scream 7.”

In October, he said there had been “a conversation” about him rejoining the horror franchise.

Dempsey mentioned to the Today show that he’s still awaiting the script, and as of now, he hasn’t read it. So, we’ll have to wait and see how things unfold.

Then it was revealed in January that Dempsey would not be playing detective Mark Kincaid again.

So what happened?

As a passionate film enthusiast, I found myself in a challenging situation recently. Living in Malibu, I’ve experienced firsthand the devastating fires that have been raging. Amidst the chaos and upheaval, coordinating schedules proved to be an insurmountable task, sadly leading to unavoidable complications. I shared this update with you exclusively during Chanel and Charles Finch’s annual pre-Oscar dinner at the Beverly Hills Hotel on Saturday night.

In “Scream 5”, Sydney Prescott (played by Neve Campbell) referred to her on-screen husband as Mark, leading fans to believe he was Mark Kincaid. However, it was recently revealed that Joel McHale is the actor portraying Sydney’s husband, contrary to initial assumptions.

In the seventh installment of “Scream,” original actors Campbell, Courteney Cox, and even Matthew Lillard are set to make a comeback. Interestingly, Lillard’s character from the first movie was previously believed to have been killed off; however, it was later discovered that he was one of the two murderers.

As a movie lover, I’m thrilled to share that Mason Gooding and Jasmin Savoy Brown, who previously starred as siblings in the fifth and sixth installments, are set to return! The new additions to the cast include Isabel May, Mark Consuelos, Asa Germann, Mckenna Grace, Sam Rechner, and Anna Camp. I can hardly wait to see this dynamic group bring their talents to the screen!

Kevin Williamson, the original author of “Scream,” will be directing the seventh film in the series for the very first time.

In early February at the premiere of his recent horror film “Heart Eyes”, I chatted with Gooding about the upcoming “Scream” movie. He hinted that it would be a more intense version of the previous installments, with the return of Kevin Williamson, who wrote the original, as director being a testament to this. Gooding added that Ghostface is reportedly at his most ruthless in this film, and without giving away too much, he suggested that there are some grisly scenes involving the human body that push the boundaries of what’s been done before.

Additionally, he mentioned, “I felt quite queasy when I saw a prosthetic device stored in the makeup room.

The seventh installment of ‘Scream’ is scheduled for a theater release on February 27, 2026. This upcoming movie is being produced by Spyglass Media and will be distributed by Paramount Pictures.
