She had a calming presence and was someone people, especially Simon and Book, found easy to confide in. For example, in the very first episode, she comforts Book after a difficult experience involving Mal and a federal agent. Because of their shared background, Simon often turned to her for advice and support.

Rebecca Gayheart Was Originally Cast to Play Firefly’s Registered Companion

Rebecca Gayheart, known for her role in Urban Legend, was originally chosen to play Inara. She even filmed a scene aboard Serenity with most of the cast, specifically when Inara’s shuttle docks with the ship on Persephone and she interacts with Shepherd Book, Mal, and Kaylee. Joss Whedon and Nathan Fillion discussed the decision to recast the role on the DVD commentary for the season’s first two episodes.

Joss Whedon explained that while they initially cast Rebecca Gayheart, it didn’t feel right. He described it as a lack of the right ‘energy’ – something that felt natural, as if the actor had always been part of the project. He found that Morena Baccarin possessed this ‘indefinable’ quality, making her the ideal choice for the role of Inara.

Joss Whedon made a specific filming choice for Inara’s shuttle landing scene because Rebecca Gayheart wasn’t working out. He shot the entire scene focusing on her individually, anticipating he’d need to replace her. This made the reshoots with Morena Baccarin much easier – he only needed to film shots of Inara herself.
