Why Matt Reeves Isn't Directing The Penguin

As a die-hard fan of both Matt Reeves and Colin Farrell, I must say, this news left me with a bittersweet taste. On one hand, it’s thrilling to see The Penguin spin-off series coming to life, with the enigmatic Colin Farrell donning the iconic tuxedo once more. On the other hand, knowing that Matt Reeves, who has been instrumental in shaping the Batman universe, couldn’t direct an episode due to scheduling conflicts, feels like a missed opportunity.

In a recent conversation, Matt Reeves, the director of The Batman, shared that he almost took on directing an episode for The Penguin spin-off series featuring Colin Farrell. Despite being heavily involved in the show’s creation, his commitments to working on the sequel for The Batman led him to relinquish the role of director. This information was disclosed during an interview with Reeves by Collider.

To put it in my own words as a dedicated fan, I truly yearned to take on the directorial role, but my initial discussions with Farrell gave me hope. Regrettably, with the extensive post-production work I had on The Batman and the script responsibilities for The Batman Part II, I found myself unable to juggle both roles effectively. At a certain juncture, it became apparent that directing an episode just wasn’t feasible for me anymore.

As a gamer, I might put it like this: Even though I wasn’t the one calling the shots this time around, I haven’t closed the door on future projects. If the right opportunity ever pops up, I’d be all in! After all, working with Farrell again on The Batman Part II sounds like a blast.

In The Penguin series, it has been confirmed by the executive producer, Reeves, that neither Robert Pattinson as Batman nor Paul Dano as the Riddler will feature. According to Reeves, who spoke with Total Film, Rob will not appear in the show. Instead, the series primarily explores the rise of Farrell’s character. Although the impact of Batman from the 2022 film lingers in the storyline, Reeves emphasized that when he tells a Batman story, it will be centered around Batman and Bruce Wayne.

On September 19, HBO Max will premiere the series titled “The Penguin.” This show boasts a talented cast that includes Michael Kelly, Cristin Milioti, and Clancy Brown. As described by Farrell, it’s a rather grim and violent production that builds upon the world of Gotham. To read a review, visit TopMob’s website.
