This year, it’s unfortunate that the Marvel panel at Comic-Con won’t be as exciting as usual because the studio won’t be present in Hall H. However, there’s a compelling explanation behind their absence.
Typically, San Diego Comic-Con is dominated by Marvel, as their celebrity-filled Hall H events are highly sought after and considered among the most popular attractions.
In the gaming world of virtual superheroes last year, I found myself immersed in epic adventures with Captain America’s crew in Brave New World, Thunderbolts*, and the Fantastic Four on their First Steps. The highlight was undeniably the Russo brothers taking the helm for Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. But that wasn’t all! The biggest surprise of them all was the announcement that none other than Robert Downey Jr would be stepping into the role of Doctor Doom.
But this year the MCU will be MIA from SDCC, for reasons to do with those Avengers.
Why is Marvel missing Comic-Con 2025?
Marvel will not attend San Diego Comic-Con in 2025 as they are dealing with logistical challenges, scheduling conflicts, and financial considerations. Instead, they aim to make a grand comeback at the event in 2026.
This week, the highly-anticipated movie “Fantastic Four: First Steps” is set to premiere. However, due to delays in film releases, it won’t be until next year that another Marvel film graces the screens, as Varity announced in May.
The film studio has decided to postpone the release of Avengers: Doomsday from May 2026 to December 2026. Instead of interrupting production in London to bring a large cast of over two dozen actors to Comic-Con 2026 this year, they are planning to reveal details about the film during the event next year.
Marvel’s influence won’t disappear; instead, it will continue through comic and game panels, plus a dedicated Fantastic Four: First Footsteps booth.
Marvel has skipped Comic-Con on several occasions in the past. Specifically, they chose not to attend in 2011, 2015, 2018, 2020, 2021, and 2023. The reasons for their absence varied – from strikes and other industry issues to global shutdowns and a lack of prepared footage.
In 2025, Marvel isn‘t the only studio opting out of releasing movies; even longtime competitors DC are focusing on the second season of Peacemaker instead of holding a movie panel. Additionally, studios such as Warner Bros., Sony, Lionsgate, Paramount, Legendary, and Lucasfilm are also choosing to skip Hall H presentations.
However, there’s plenty more thrilling movie content on the horizon! We’ve got sneak peeks coming up for movies like Project Hail Mary, Tron: Ares, and Predator: Badlands, and rest assured, we won’t miss covering any of them!
