Why Lego Star Wars Is Bringing Darth Jar Jar To Life In Rebuild The Galaxy

As a seasoned gamer with decades of Star Wars lore ingrained into my very being, I must say that the upcoming miniseries, Lego Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy, has piqued my interest like never before. The prospect of Darth Jar Jar is not only intriguing but also a testament to the limitless potential of fan-driven ideas.

The idea that Jar Jar Binks was secretly a Sith lord has been an amusing Star Wars joke and meme for years. But next month, the idea of Darth Jar Jar will finally be given form in the new miniseries, Lego Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy. At Comic-Con, the creative team behind the show explained why they decided to incorporate Jar Jar’s dark side into the story.

Dan Hernandez, both writer and producer for Rebuild the Galaxy, shared with TopMob their enthusiasm about the chance to reimagine the Star Wars universe musically. Additionally, they acknowledged that this could potentially be the unique moment to animate the character of Darth Jar Jar.

“Hernandez mentioned, ‘Could we really explore the story of Darth Jar Jar in a serious manner, and what might that narrative entail?’ Instead of just a humorous spin-off, we considered questions like, ‘What circumstances could turn him into a Sith?’ And where would he fit within the Star Wars universe. We wanted to create a portrayal that surprised people, making them question, ‘Could Darth Jar Jar truly be intimidating? Could he be anything more than what fans have imagined?’ Furthermore, Hernandez expressed excitement about Ahmed Best reprising his role as Darth Jar Jar, given his exceptional portrayal of the character and deep affection for both him and the Star Wars franchise.”

As stated by Hernandez, it appears that Best not just knew about the Darth Jar Jar internet jokes, but wholeheartedly adopted them as he developed his character towards its darkest moments by incorporating improvisation.

“[Best] was eager to portray a unique take on the character,” Hernandez continued. “He was familiar with fan theories and internet memes, so he began improvising and speaking in various Darth Jar Jar-like ways, which we welcomed and decided to incorporate directly into the series.”

Benji Samit, both writer and producer, noted that the blended scenes in the series were designed as a joyful tribute to mark the 25th year of collaboration between LEGO and Star Wars.

According to Samit, the goal was to evoke the sense of playing with your Star Wars Legos. Instead of simply reenacting movie scenes as they are, people tend to get creative. They’ll pour out the Lego pieces, mix and match them, often reversing roles – good guys become bad, and vice versa. Ships might even be squashed together. For the 25th anniversary of the Star Wars Lego partnership, the intention was to create something that truly embodies this unique style of play – a pure celebration, if you will.

Lego Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy will premiere on Disney+ on September 13.
