Why Kraven The Hunter Was Sony’s Last Movie In The Spider-Man Universe Franchise

The movie starring Kraven the Hunter didn’t generate much interest at the box office when it came out in 2024, and its lackluster performance can be compared to that of the X-Men films. The stories of both within and outside the Marvel Cinematic Universe reveal why this franchise might have reached its conclusion. Although there are occasional discussions about Venom teaming up with Spider-Man, it appears that Sony’s planned sequels featuring Spider-Man characters may no longer be in production. While nothing in comic book films is ever truly over, numerous hints suggest that many, if not all, of these character adaptations have run their course.

It can be challenging to keep track of all the Marvel shared universes due to their numerous interconnections. The movies like “Spider-Man: No Way Home” linking with various universes have led some fans to speculate that these realities are merged together. The inclusion of X-Men in “Avengers: Doomsday” has added fuel to this theory, creating even more complexity. However, I’d contend that it’s highly improbable for characters from Sony’s universe to appear in future projects.

Fox’s X-Men Movies Had Some Major Wins & Losses Just Like Sony’s Spider-Man Universe

The Franchise Has Had Many High-Highs And Several Low-Lows

As a die-hard fan, I’ve noticed an intriguing parallel between the timelines of Fox’s X-Men Universe and Sony’s Spider-Man universe, despite their distinct origins and varying degrees of success. While some films in the X-Men franchise have soared, others have faltered. Interestingly, the latest additions to the saga have seen this trend continue – we had blockbusters like Deadpool and Wolverine, yet The New Mutants underperformed at the box office.

The earnings at the box office demonstrate that the appeal of this franchise fluctuated over time, and this pattern was evident with Sony’s movies too. Interestingly, the Venom series has consistently managed good returns, with the 2024 sequel earning $474 million alone. However, other films in the franchise didn’t achieve the same level of success. The Spider-Verse movies were also successful, but they stood apart from the main franchise due to being animated films that existed within their own universe.

The New Mutants’ Box Office Serves As A Cautionary Tale To Sony’s Spider-Man Universe

The 2020 Film Is The Lowest Gross X-Men Film

Although the X-Men series had previously achieved massive success, earning more than half a billion dollars across multiple films, the fortunes changed with The New Mutants’ underwhelming performance. Various factors contributed to this outcome, including mismanagement in its release and decisions that ultimately hindered the success of this X-Men spinoff. It’s evident that The New Mutants was a significant setback for Fox, as it fell far short of expectations, generating only around $47 million on a production budget of $67 million—a financially damaging outcome for the studio.

As a dedicated movie enthusiast, I must admit that the expansiveness hinted at here surpasses initial expectations. The explosive popularity of cinematic universes in Hollywood, ignited by the phenomenal success of The Avengers, has shown us that not every franchise deserves its own cinematic universe. Fox, for instance, tried to broaden their universe with titles like The New Mutants, but it failed to garner significant interest. The recent flop of Kraven the Hunter seems to underscore Sony’s potential struggle in establishing a self-sustaining universe.

After Killing Their Main Lead, Sony’s Spider-Man Universe Can’t Pull Its Own Deadpool & Wolverine Either

Sony Has No Bankable Characters Left In Their Franchise

Following the underperformance of “The New Mutants” at the box office, the X-Men universe decided to conclude its story arc by featuring some beloved characters in one final farewell tale, culminating in their most financially successful film, “Deadpool & Wolverine.” However, it seems that Sony does not possess any characters suitable for such a venture. Tom Hardy’s Venom was their most profitable character, but his demise at the end of “Venom: The Last Dance” leaves Sony with limited options to proceed.

Considering the broader picture of their franchise, Sony appears to have taken a similar approach with characters they believe have greater potential by reuniting Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield in Spider-Man: No Way Home. It seems these characters might be their primary choice for future projects. However, given that Venom’s demise is relatively recent, it feels premature to consider bringing Tom Hardy back for another venture at this point; perhaps several years down the line would be more suitable.

It appears that Sony’s focus has shifted towards crafting exceptional movies for Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse and the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe film, Spider-Man: Fresh Start. Regrettably, this change may mark the conclusion of the standalone Sony universe, including iconic villains like Kraven the Hunter. While parting ways is never easy, it seems that this move has been strategically sound, and perhaps its benefits will become apparent as more Sony Spider-Man films unfold in the coming years.
