Why James Gunn Left Marvel & Joined DC

Preparations are underway for the launch of James Gunn‘s highly anticipated superhero movie titled “Superman”. In light of this exciting development, fans have been intrigued about Gunn’s transition from DC to Marvel Studios. Therefore, we’re all wondering: What led James Gunn to depart from Marvel and align himself with DC?

Here is everything you need to know about Gunn’s exit from Marvel.

Why did James Gunn leave Marvel?

James Gunn was removed from Marvel after past offensive tweets resurfaced.

In the year 2018, the director faced intense public criticism as a number of his older tweets gained wide attention. These tweets contained humor about topics such as rape, pedophilia, and abuse. One tweet read, “I enjoy it when young boys touch me in an inappropriate manner.” Another one said, “The most delightful aspect of being raped is the relief when the act is over, feeling ‘phew, I’m no longer being raped!’

Despite deleting his tweets earlier, they had already gone viral, sparking a strong public outcry. Consequently, Walt Disney Studios decided to terminate James Gunn’s involvement in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, ending their professional partnership. The studio chairman explained this decision to ABC, stating that the offensive comments and viewpoints found on Gunn’s Twitter account were unacceptable and contradicted the values of the studio.

On X (previously Twitter), Gunn openly admitted for his past actions and extended a sincere apology, explaining that those tweets were unsuccessful attempts at being humorous in an edgy manner. He also expressed that he has evolved personally since then.

A significant number of people advocated for his reappointment, among them were the cast members from Guardians of the Galaxy who penned an open letter in support. Dave Bautista expressed intentions to leave the project if Gunn wasn’t part of it, while Chris Pratt voiced disapproval over the studio’s decision. Eventually, Disney re-employed Gunn, and Volume 3 turned out to be a hit at the box office.

Following his termination, Warner Bros. proposed to Gunn that he direct any DC movie. He opted for The Suicide Squad, which earned positive reviews. In 2022, Gunn and producer Peter Safran were appointed co-CEOs of DC Studios. His future film, Superman, is set to hit theaters on July 11, 2025.
